Where to stay in Spain: most popular cities

Spain splits into big cities, islands and coasts full of resorts. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Barcelona. The most chosen and most expensive destination. Gaudí's architecture with the Sagrada Familia, beaches and lively city life.
• Madrid. The capital, with the Prado and Reina Sofia museums plus great food and nightlife.
• Palma de Mallorca. The capital of the Balearics, a base for the island's beaches and bays, with a wide choice of hotels.
• Valencia. The city of arts and sciences, paella and beaches within a walk. A cheaper alternative to Barcelona.
• Seville. The heart of Andalusia, with its cathedral, the Alcazar and flamenco. Summer can be hot, so spring is the most pleasant.

The country combines cities, islands and coasts, so it is easy to match a trip to what interests you.

• Barcelona. Gaudí's work, the Sagrada Familia and Casa Batlló, plus seaside districts and busy streets.

How much does a trip to Spain cost

Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate. A single public transport ticket is about 2 €, and a meal at a simple restaurant from around 10 €. A week of groceries is roughly 50 €. Cards work almost everywhere. Outside Madrid and Barcelona, prices are often noticeably lower.

When is the best time to visit Spain

The busiest months and the highest prices fall in summer, from June to August. You can travel off-season and save, as the weather is still good for sightseeing. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant for the cities, especially Andalusia, which is hot in summer. For the Balearics and the coasts, May to October is best.

Getting to and around Spain

The biggest airports are in Barcelona, Madrid and Palma de Mallorca, served by Iberia and the low-cost carriers Vueling, easyJet and Ryanair. RENFE high-speed trains link the main cities, and the Madrid to Barcelona route is fast and comfortable. Buses are the cheapest way to travel, with Madrid to Barcelona around 20 €. The big cities have a metro, and a single ticket costs about 2 €. Low-cost domestic flights are worth it over longer distances. Car rental starts at about 14 € per day.
