When to book a room in Altea for the lowest price

The spread between winter and summer here is very wide. December comes out cheapest, averaging around 78 EUR per night, a drop of roughly 49 percent against the rest of the year. August is the priciest at around 253 EUR, because that is when the entire Costa Blanca runs at full tilt. Book at least 29 days before arrival, notably less than at resorts built around theme parks, though in August it still pays to move earlier. A typical stay in Altea runs 8 days, far longer than in cities people pass through, so the gap between December and August multiplies across a whole week.

Where to stay in Altea

The town splits into two logics. The Casco Antiguo, the old quarter on the hill, gives you pedestrian lanes, white houses and the view over the sea, but it also means hauling luggage uphill. The Paseo Marítimo below is flat, with hotels a few steps from the pebble beaches, bars and restaurants. Apart from those sits Altea Hills, a sprawling villa zone on the slope above town holding nearly as many properties as Altea itself, plus the smaller El Planet. Think about parking in advance: at the height of the season spaces in town are paid and hard to find, and the free municipal car park means a longer walk with a suitcase. If you are watching the budget, the neighbouring towns work out cheaper: in La Nucía rooms start at about 72 EUR per night, in hillside Parcent at about 104 EUR and in Benidorm at about 146 EUR. Buses and the tram serve them, but a daily commute eats into the day.

Which stay in Altea suits whom

• Couples. Altea has a notably large share of adults-only properties. Porta Nova Suites Altea and MIMAR ALTEA ROOMS take adults only, and La Serena Boutique Hotel & Wellness stands on a quiet street in the historic centre.
• For the beach. Hotel Cap Negret has private access to the pebble Cap Negret beach and outdoor pools. Maison Salva by Santas Hotels is about 500 metres from Playa de L'Espigó, and Las Torres by Santas Hotels under a kilometre from La Roda.
• In the old town. Hotel Abaco Altea occupies a traditional house in the heart of the Bellaguarda quarter, with Guest House Bellaguarda right beside it. Everything is walkable from here, but uphill.
• With family. Aqua Natura Park lies about 13 kilometres from town and the Terra Mítica theme park about 15. La Roda and Cap Negret beaches shelve gently into the water.
• On a budget. The lowest rates belong to Camping Santa Clara by Cap Blanch, Hostal Fornet, and the rooms and apartments along La Mar street, Habitaciones La Mar and Apartamentos La Mar among them.
• Without a car. The nearest airport is Alicante. Paid transfers are offered by properties around the area, including Port Benidorm Hotel & Spa, Barceló la Nucía Hills and AR Diamante Beach & SPA Hotel in Calpe. A tram runs along the coast, taking you as far as Denia or south past Benidorm.

When Altea gets more expensive

August is far and away the priciest here, because half of Spain and half of Europe descend on the Costa Blanca at once. In spring the town lives around the Fiestas de las Cruces, and the Altea Music Festival is a separate fixture in the calendar. Out of season Altea does not shut down, being a town of artists with galleries and studios, but December is when room rates drop to their lowest of the year.
