Where to stay in Poland: most popular cities

Poland splits clearly into historic cities, mountain bases and seaside resorts. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Warsaw. The capital and the widest choice of hotels, from budget chains to 5-star properties. A solid base for business trips and city breaks.
• Krakow. The Old Town, Wawel and Kazimierz within walking distance. The largest selection of boutique hotels and townhouse stays.
• Gdansk and the Tri-City. The Old Town by the Motlawa plus the beaches of Sopot and Gdynia. Prices rise in summer, so book early.
• Zakopane. The gateway to the Tatra Mountains, popular for skiing in winter and hiking in summer. Plenty of guesthouses and hotels with a pool.
• Wroclaw. The market square, the Odra islands and good transport links. A growing choice of new hotels.
• The coast (Kolobrzeg, Swinoujscie, Miedzyzdroje). Resorts with plenty of spa and family hotels. The peak season is July and August.

What to see in Poland

Poland combines cities, mountains and the sea, so it is easy to match a trip to the season.

• City weekends. The old towns of Krakow, Gdansk and Wroclaw and modern Warsaw. A short break works well based around one city.
• Memorial sites. The former Auschwitz-Birkenau camp near Oswiecim is a frequent stop on history-focused trips. Entry needs to be booked in advance.
• The Baltic. Sandy beaches on the Hel Peninsula, in Sopot and along the bay. Summer is the best time.
• The mountains. The Tatras with a base in Zakopane, hiking in summer and skiing in winter. The Beskids and Karkonosze are quieter and cheaper.
• Nature. The Masurian lakes and the Bialowieza Forest with its bison suit travellers after peace and quiet.

How much does a trip to Poland cost

Beyond the room, daily costs are lower than in Western Europe. A public transport ticket is about 3-4 zł and a fast-food meal about 18-25 zł. Large hotels and restaurants take cards, while cash is handy in smaller places. ATMs are common, including in smaller towns.

When is the best time to visit Poland

Most events and warm weather fall in June, July and August. That is also the price peak at the seaside. May and September are cheaper and still good for sightseeing. The ski season in the mountains usually runs from December to March, so Zakopane and the Beskids cost more then. Spring and autumn suit the big cities best.

Getting to and around Poland

Most international flights land at Warsaw Chopin Airport, with low-cost routes also served by Modlin and the airports in Krakow, Gdansk and Wroclaw. PKP Intercity long-distance trains link the main cities, and rail is usually faster than the bus between large hubs. The bus network (including FlixBus) reaches smaller towns. There are also low-cost domestic flights. A metro runs only in Warsaw, while other cities use trams and buses. A single public transport ticket costs just a few zloty.
