Where to stay in Pakistan: most popular cities

Travellers most often stay in the big cities of Punjab and Sindh and in the hill resorts. These are the destinations chosen most often:

• Karachi. The largest city and a port on the Arabian Sea, with beaches and business hotels. The main air hub of the south.
• Lahore. The cultural capital, with Lahore Fort, the Badshahi Mosque and the Shalimar Gardens. The widest choice of historic and boutique hotels.
• Islamabad. The modern, calm capital at the foot of the hills, with upper-tier hotels and good infrastructure.
• Murree. A popular hill resort near the capital, a base for summer trips and views. Plenty of mid-range hotels.
• Faisalabad. A large industrial city in Punjab, with business hotels and good links.

This is a destination for those who value history, monuments and mountain scenery away from the crowds.

• Lahore Fort. A mighty Mughal fortress in Lahore, next to the Badshahi Mosque and the Shalimar Gardens.
• Kaghan Valley. An alpine valley in the north, popular for trekking and time in nature.
• Ganish Village. One of the oldest settlements on the Silk Road, awarded by UNESCO for heritage conservation.
• Khewra Salt Mine. The second-largest salt mine in the world, known for pink Himalayan salt.

How much does a trip to Pakistan cost

Daily costs are very low. A cheap meal is about 250 PKR (around 1.60 USD), a mid-range restaurant dish about 750 PKR. A local bus ticket is about 30 PKR. Cards are taken mainly at large hotels and chains, but cash rules everyday spending, so it helps to carry rupees (PKR).

When is the best time to visit Pakistan

The best time is from May to October, when it is warm and dry and the northern mountains are accessible. November can also be good value. Summer in the lowlands like Karachi and Lahore can be very hot, so hill resorts like Murree get busy and pricier then.

Getting to and around Pakistan

The three main international airports are Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, and the national carrier Pakistan International Airlines flies to over 50 destinations. Within the country, trains run in several classes and cheap long-distance buses (such as Daewoo) reach almost everywhere. In cities, rickshaws are common, with the fare negotiated before the ride (there are none in Islamabad). Domestic flights are operated by Airblue and PIA, among others, with PIA flying to the north, to Skardu, Chitral and Gilgit. Cars can be rented in the larger cities.
