The country splits into the Caribbean coast, Pacific resorts and inland cities. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Cancun. The capital of Caribbean holidays, with a strip of all-inclusive hotels and an airport serving the whole Riviera Maya.
• Playa del Carmen. A trendy resort with the Quinta Avenida promenade, a base for Tulum and Cozumel.

Mexico combines beaches, ancient ruins and colourful cities, so it is easy to match a trip to your interests.

• Mexico City. Start your trip in the capital: the historic centre, Zocalo square and the Frida Kahlo house turned into a museum.
• Mayan ruins. On the Yucatan Peninsula see seaside Tulum, Chichen Itza with the El Castillo pyramid, and Coba.
• The El Chepe train. A scenic route through canyons and hills, over 600 km and dozens of bridges.

How much does a trip to Mexico cost

Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate. A cheap meal is about 100 MXN per person. Large hotels and restaurants take cards, but cash (peso) rules for street food and smaller merchants. ATMs are common in cities and resorts.

When is the best time to visit Mexico

The dry season from December to April is nicest on the coast and the most expensive. Summer can be hot and rainy, and the Caribbean hurricane season runs roughly from June to November. Inland cities are comfortable to visit year-round.

Getting to and around Mexico

International flights use many airports, with the most frequent links from the USA, and the main domestic carrier is Aeromexico. Around the country there are comfortable long-distance buses and cheap domestic flights, as distances can be long. Mexico City has an extensive metro, and resorts are served by transfers and taxis.
