Hotels in Mérida: prices, timing and areas
Mérida is the colonial capital of the Yucatán, a city of colourful facades, Mayan heritage and cuisine like cochinita pibil, often visited on the way to the cenotes and the ruins. A stay here is largely boutique hotels in restored townhouses and former mansions, and guests stay unusually long, about nine nights on average, since many use Mérida as a base for a longer trip. This list has 814 properties, from a hostel bed to a five-star hacienda. Below is what really drives the price of a stay in Mérida: the month, the day of the week and the district.
When to book a stay in Mérida for less
Mérida runs the opposite way to beach resorts. June is the cheapest, in the middle of the hot, humid summer, when rates drop to their lowest in the year. January is the priciest, at the peak of the winter dry season, when guests escaping the cold up north arrive and rates can run twice as high. Spring and autumn outside the peak are a good compromise between the weather and the price. The arrival day matters too: Monday is the cheapest, Thursday the most expensive. For a good date, book about two months ahead, as the lowest rates show up around 60 days before the date.
What a stay costs by property type
The price spread in Mérida is wide, since a hostel bed and a room in a hacienda are worlds apart. The cheapest sleep is in hostels and guesthouses in the centre; you pay the most for a five-star hacienda or a boutique hotel with a pool and spa. Below are indicative nightly rates for two.
| Property type | Indicative price per night (from) |
| Hostel bed or budget hotel | from approx. MXN 230 |
| Three-star hotel | from approx. MXN 1,000 |
| Boutique or four-star hotel | from approx. MXN 1,570 |
| Family room | from approx. MXN 2,120 |
| Hacienda or five-star hotel | from approx. MXN 3,440 |

Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more
Most properties cluster in Centro, the colonial centre around Plaza Grande, where you find both the cheapest hostels and elegant casonas. The pricier and grander stays sit along Paseo de Montejo, the wide avenue with its former mansions. To the north, around Xcanatun and outside the city, are restored haciendas with pools, quieter and away from the bustle. Mérida is flat and well served by cheap buses and ride-hailing apps, so a base further from the main square is still convenient.
Which stay in Mérida suits whom
- First time in Mérida. Centro, by Plaza Grande, is the easiest base. From here you can walk to the cathedral, the Palacio de Gobierno and the Lucas de Gálvez market.
- For families. Apartments with a kitchen and family rooms near the centre, many with a pool that saves the hot afternoons. The flat city is easy to explore with children.
- For couples. Boutique casonas and adults-only hotels in the centre, and haciendas outside the city like Hacienda Xcanatun. A short trip from there for dinner on Paseo de Montejo.
- For a longer stay. Aparthotels and flats by the week, handy for remote workers and the many retirees in Mérida. The average stay here reaches nine nights.
- With breakfast. Many hotels in Centro, like the Gran Hotel or Hotel Colonial, include breakfast in the rate, handy before a day of sightseeing or a cenote trip.
- Near the airport. Hotels by Manuel Crescencio Rejón (MID) and haciendas with a shuttle suit an early flight or a short stop.
