Where to stay in Morocco: most popular cities

Morocco splits into imperial cities with medinas, the Atlantic port and towns at the foot of the mountains. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Marrakesh. The most popular and on average priciest destination, with the buzzing Jemaa el-Fna square, souks and riads in the medina.
• Casablanca. The country's largest city and main transport hub, with the Hassan II Mosque by the ocean.
• Tangier. A port where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, the gateway to Morocco from Spain.
• Chefchaouen. The blue town in the Rif Mountains, the cheapest stays on average and an atmospheric old town.
• Fes. The oldest imperial medina, with a maze of lanes, crafts and tanneries.

What to see in Morocco

The country combines cities, desert, coast and mountains, so a trip is easy to match to your travel style.

• Medinas. The historic, traffic-free old towns of Fes, Marrakesh and Essaouira, with souks and riads.
• The Sahara. Trips by camel or 4x4 to the Erg Chebbi dunes, oases and desert camps.
• The Atlantic coast. Essaouira, Agadir and beaches good for surfing and relaxing.

The local currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Daily costs are low, with a restaurant meal costing the equivalent of about $3-17 and basic groceries about $2. Hotels and larger restaurants and shops take cards, but cash matters in the souks and markets. ATMs are in the larger cities and at major hotels.

When is the best time to visit Morocco

Morocco can be visited all year, but the most pleasant time is spring, from April to May, and autumn, from September to November. The coast has a milder climate, while inland, in the mountains and the desert, temperatures can be extreme. December is the most expensive month for a room, June the cheapest.

Getting to and around Morocco

The most popular airports are Marrakesh, Casablanca and Fes. From Marrakesh Menara Airport, the centre is about $3 by bus or about $7 by taxi. Casablanca has a rail link from the airport to the centre. Buses run from France and Spain, and ferries link Spanish ports with Tangier and Nador. Around the country, trains are convenient between the main cities, along with long-distance buses, while taxis and trams serve the cities.
