What to see in Cameroon

Cameroon combines wild nature, mountains and the coast, so it is easy to match a trip to the region.

  • Campo-Maan Park. A protected rainforest where, with some luck, you can spot elephants, gorillas and leopards. Best with a guide.
  • Ekom-Nkam Falls. Mighty cascades known from film, one of the most spectacular sights in the country.
  • Mount Cameroon (Mount Fako). An active volcano over 4,000 m, home to the annual Mount Cameroon Race of Hope. Climbed with a guide.
  • Fon's Palace. The seat of a dynasty over 700 years old, a window onto the country's traditional culture.
  • Nguon Festival. Held every two years in December, a celebration of Bamum culture with centuries of tradition.

How much does a trip to Cameroon cost

Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A week of groceries is about XAF 10,000 (approx. USD 17) and a transport ticket about XAF 250. The currency is the CFA franc. Cash is the basis for payments, ATMs are in the larger cities and cards are mainly taken by big hotels. It is worth carrying cash.

When is the best time to visit Cameroon

The most comfortable time is the dry season, roughly November to February, when roads are easier to use. November tends to be the cheapest month for stays and August the most expensive. The rainy season makes travel harder, especially inland.

Getting to and around Cameroon

The country has two international airports, in Douala and Yaounde (Nsimalen). Most flights from Europe land in Douala, including from Paris and Brussels. Camrail trains run on the Yaounde-Douala, Yaounde-N'Gaoundere and Douala-Kumba routes. City public transport relies on shared taxis, where the fare is agreed with the driver before the ride. Entry requires a visa and a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
