We had a great stay right in the middle of Kokokan village, a heron birds sanctuary on the edge of Ubud. Waking up to birds roosting in front of the family-run hotel was amazing, and the breakfast ordered the night before came from a nearby family, which was a cool touch. There’s a little path by the hotel leading to the forest and a spot nearby for bird watching, making it a nice place to chill or explore for a night or two.
