Indonesia splits between touristy Bali, the capital on Java and quieter islands. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Jakarta. The capital on Java and the most searched city, from hostels to business and 5-star hotels.
• Denpasar and Kuta (Bali). The gateway to Bali with the airport, beaches and the widest choice of resorts and beachfront hotels.

Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A meal at a local eatery costs the equivalent of a few dollars, and basic groceries are cheap too. Cards work in hotels, restaurants and shops in larger cities, but at markets, warungs and on smaller islands cash is essential. ATMs are in cities and resorts.

When is the best time to visit Indonesia

Indonesia sits on the equator, so temperatures are even all year (around 79-82°F). There are two monsoon seasons: one from December to March and the other from June to September. The driest, most pleasant months are May, June and September. July and August are the peak of the Bali season and the highest prices. November is usually the cheapest.

Getting to and around Indonesia

Most international flights arrive in Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta) and Bali (Denpasar Ngurah Rai), served by Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Etihad among others. Between islands the fastest way is low-cost domestic airlines (Garuda Indonesia, AirAsia, Lion Air), and cheaper is by ferry (including Pelni). Java and Sumatra have rail. In cities you travel by bus (BRT), angkot mini-buses and ojek motorcycle taxis. Bali is explored by scooter or with a driver.
