It has a large, well-preserved Old Town, the famous Laisvės Alėja pedestrian avenue lined with 1930s Modernist architecture, and the scenic meeting of the Nemunas and Neris rivers at Confluence Park. A mediaeval castle looks over the city, and historic funiculars climb the surrounding hills. The choice of stays is wide: from budget rooms and studios to three- and four-star hotels, apartments by the avenue and atmospheric boutique properties. Guests usually stay two or three days. Prices follow tourist traffic. The most expensive stretch is June, at the start of full summer and the festival season, when rates can run about half higher than off season. The most atmospheric base is Senamiestis, the Old Town, right by the castle, the cathedral and the restaurants, a short walk to the meeting of the rivers. Naujamiestis, the New Town around Laisvės Alėja, is close by, with cafés, shops and easy transport, a favourite for work trips. It is quieter and greener in Žaliakalnis, by the historic funicular and the oak grove. Around the centre you mostly walk, and buses and trolleybuses reach the farther districts. The airport sits about 15 km from the centre, a 20 to 30 minute taxi ride away.

You pay the most in summer, at the height of the season, with the peak in June, when the festivals run and the avenue is busy. Off season, especially in winter, rates drop clearly. Four-star hotels and spa properties always hold a higher tier, whatever the season.

The most atmospheric is the Old Town, close to the castle, the cathedral and the restaurants. The New Town around Laisvės Alėja is handy for work trips, with cafés and shops at hand. It is quieter and greener in Žaliakalnis by the funicular. Around the centre it is easiest to get around on foot.
Families do best in the Old Town and Žaliakalnis with the funicular, plus the flat paths in Confluence Park that suit a stroller. Couples more often choose boutique hotels in the Old Town, a walk along Vilniaus Street and an outing to the Baroque monastery in Pažaislis.
Kaunas Airport sits about 15 km from the centre, a 20 to 30 minute taxi or ride-hailing trip. Around the centre and the Old Town you walk, and buses and trolleybuses with app tickets reach the farther districts. Two historic funiculars climb the surrounding hills.
