Romania combines the capital, the Transylvanian cities and the resorts. These are the destinations chosen most often:

• Bucharest. The capital and arrival point, with the widest choice of hotels, from budget to 5-star. The Palace of Parliament and a buzzing old town.

Daily costs are low. A public transport ticket is about 1-3 RON, daily groceries about 50-100 RON. ATMs are everywhere and cards are taken at hotels, restaurants and shops. The currency is the Romanian leu (RON), so at markets and in smaller places it helps to carry some cash.

When is the best time to visit Romania

The ski season in the Carpathians runs from December to March, so that is a good time for the mountains. Beach-goers head to the Black Sea in summer, from June to August, which is also when most cultural events take place. Booking is cheapest in February and most expensive in May and at the height of summer.

Getting to and around Romania

The country has five main international airports, including Otopeni in Bucharest, with low-cost routes from Spain, Germany, Italy and the UK. Romania is also well connected by train from Vienna, Budapest and Sofia, and by FlixBus and Eurolines buses. Within the country, you travel by CFR trains (InterCity, InterRegio, Regio), and in cities by trams, buses and the Bucharest metro. A city ticket costs a few lei. Tarom and Blue Air operate domestic flights.
