Where to stay in Paraguay: most popular cities

Travellers most often stay in Asunción and in the border cities. These are the destinations chosen most often:

• Asunción. The capital and arrival point, with colourful streets, museums and the widest choice of hotels. The best base to start.
• Ciudad del Este. A city at the triple border with Brazil and Argentina, known for trade and close to the waterfalls. Plenty of business hotels.
• Encarnación. A city on the Paraná river with urban beaches, a gateway to the Jesuit ruins. Apart-hotels and resorts.
• San Bernardino. A resort on Lake Ypacaraí, popular at weekends, with guesthouses and leisure hotels.
• Luque. A city by the airport in the Asunción metro area, handy for the first and last night.

This is a destination for those who value calm, nature and history, away from the tourist crowds.

• Asunción. The capital with the Museo del Barro and the Palacio de los López, where it is worth trying cold tereré.
• Saltos del Monday waterfalls. Striking cascades near Ciudad del Este, close to the triple border.
• Jesuit ruins in Trinidad. The largest Jesuit mission in the world, on the UNESCO list.
• Laguna Blanca. A natural lake with a sandy beach and over 275 bird species, an alternative to the sea.
• Cerro Tres Kandú. The country's highest peak, an easy hike doable in under 2 hours.

How much does a trip to Paraguay cost

Daily costs are very low. A cheap meal is about 25,000 PYG (around 4 USD), a mid-range restaurant dish about 75,000 PYG. A local bus ticket is about 3,500 PYG. Cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants, but cash is handy day to day, especially small change. The currency is the guaraní (PYG).

When is the best time to visit Paraguay

Summer runs from October to March and is warm, sometimes hot and humid. For cooler, less humid weather, go between April and September, which is also when many events and festivals take place. Booking is cheapest in April and most expensive in March, at the end of summer.

Getting to and around Paraguay

Most travellers fly into Silvio Pettirossi airport in Asunción, with connections to other South American countries, Miami and Madrid. You can also enter by car or bus from Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia, with regular services linking São Paulo, Buenos Aires and La Paz, among others. Within the country, you travel by bus and shared colectivo taxis. Renting a car gives freedom, though a 4WD helps outside the main cities.
