Daily costs are very low. A cheap meal is about 25,000 PYG (around 4 USD), a mid-range restaurant dish about 75,000 PYG. A local bus ticket is about 3,500 PYG. Cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants, but cash is handy day to day, especially small change. The currency is the guaraní (PYG).
Summer runs from October to March and is warm, sometimes hot and humid. For cooler, less humid weather, go between April and September, which is also when many events and festivals take place. Booking is cheapest in April and most expensive in March, at the end of summer.
Most travellers fly into Silvio Pettirossi airport in Asunción, with connections to other South American countries, Miami and Madrid. You can also enter by car or bus from Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia, with regular services linking São Paulo, Buenos Aires and La Paz, among others. Within the country, you travel by bus and shared colectivo taxis. Renting a car gives freedom, though a 4WD helps outside the main cities.
A few recognisable properties from different cities for reference:
Rates are usually lowest in April, at the start of the cooler season. March, at the end of summer, tends to be the most expensive. Booking ahead usually helps you find a better rate, especially in Asunción.
The most popular destination is Asunción, the capital with the widest choice of hotels and the arrival point. Ciudad del Este and Encarnación follow.

Citizens of most EU countries enter visa-free. Citizens of the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand can get a visa on arrival at Asunción airport. Everyone else needs a visa before arrival. The exact rules depend on your citizenship.
