Book a transferGreece combines mainland cities full of ancient sites with hundreds of islands scattered across the Aegean and Ionian seas. From Athens through Santorini to Crete, the choice of places to stay is huge. We list 83 989 properties across 3908 cities: from hostels and apartments to 5-star hotels and villas. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, and notes on season and transport.
The price depends on the standard, the island or city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest month is usually January, while August at the peak of the season is the priciest. Booking ahead usually brings better rates, especially on the islands.
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Hostels and budget stays | from approx. 40 € |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. 78 € |
| 4-star hotels | from approx. 120 € |

Greece splits between the mainland, with Athens and Thessaloniki, and islands of very different character. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:
Nightly rates vary between destinations. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:

| Mykonos | from approx. 125 € |
| Heraklion | from approx. 68 € |

Greece combines antiquity, islands and food, so it is easy to match a trip to the season.
Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is about 10 euros, and a public transport ticket about 2 euros. In larger cities most places take cards, while cash is handy on smaller islands and in villages. ATMs are common in cities and resorts.
The best weather for the beach is in May, June, September and October, with high summer in July and August. August is the priciest and most crowded. For sightseeing and lower prices, May and October and November are better. In winter the islands are quiet and cheap, though some seasonal hotels close.
Most international flights land at Athens airport, with the number of routes to Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Corfu and Crete rising in season. Buses run by KTEL are one of the cheapest options, and frequent ferries serve the islands, mostly in summer. A train links Athens and Thessaloniki, and domestic flights are run by Aegean Airlines and Ryanair. In Athens the metro combined with buses is the most convenient.
A few recognisable properties from different destinations for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in January, outside the summer season. August, at the height of the island season, tends to be the most expensive. Booking a few weeks ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
The most popular destination is Athens, followed by the islands of Santorini, Mykonos and Crete. Athens offers the widest choice of hotels in every standard and a convenient base for connections.
The highest rates are on Santorini, especially in Oia, and on Mykonos in high summer. Crete around Heraklion and the off-season are cheaper.
Greece is part of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Travellers from many countries do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days and enter with a valid passport or ID. The exact rules depend on your citizenship.
