When to book a stay in Corfu for less

The price is driven by the island beach season. Summer is the priciest, at its peak from June to August, when the temperature reaches thirty degrees and Corfu fills with holidaymakers. Then rates can climb by almost a third above the average. It is cheapest in winter, around December, when tourist traffic dies down and prices fall by as much as two thirds. Quieter and still warm are the shoulder seasons, spring and early autumn. The day of the week matters a lot too: Thursday works out cheapest, at around EUR 130 a night on average, while Monday is dearest, when rates can be many times higher. For a summer stay, book ahead, around three months, as the best properties in the Old Town go first.

Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more

The handiest and most atmospheric area is the Old Town, a tangle of narrow lanes between two fortresses, with the Liston arcade, restaurants and shops within a walk. Here the properties are the most sought-after and fill the fastest. Slightly quieter and cheaper is the newer part of town, away from the historic core, from where the old town is still walkable and the Corfu Bus Company buses reach the beaches and the rest of the island. The cheapest rooms are in simpler properties away from the waterfront. Near Mon Repos and Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport suits those who want the shortest hop from plane to bed.

• First time on the island. The Old Town near the Liston arcade and the fortresses is the easiest base. From here you can walk to the sights and restaurants, and take a bus to the beaches.
• For families. Properties with family rooms and apartments with a kitchenette, near the bus stops. Easy to mix sightseeing in town with a day on the beach.
• For couples. Boutique hotels in an old townhouse and adults-only properties, such as Mon Repos Palace, near the restaurants and the evening promenade.
