Barbados is mainly about beaches, but it also has rum culture and lively towns.
A meal at a standard restaurant is about 10 to 15 dollars, a local beer about 2 dollars. Most small businesses are cash-based, though upscale restaurants, hotels and tour companies take cards. The currency is the Barbadian dollar, pegged to the US dollar. A bus costs under 2 dollars.
The climate is tropical year-round, with the best conditions from December to May, with temperatures around 29 to 31 degrees and little rain. That is also the peak season, when prices are highest. Outside it, lower rates are easier to find.
The only airport is Grantley Adams, with direct flights from the US, Canada and the UK, plus other Caribbean islands. There are no regular ferries. Around the island, government buses in blue and yellow run alongside private ZR vans that work like informal taxis. A ticket costs only cents. You can rent a car, but you need a local permit from the rental agency, and care is needed on coastal roads.
A few recognisable properties from different parts of the island for reference:
It is most expensive at the peak winter season from December to May. It tends to be cheaper outside that window, in summer and early autumn. Booking ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
Most hotels are near Bridgetown and in St Lawrence Gap in the south. The west coast around Holetown is home to elegant resorts.
