Stays in Ujjain: prices and the best time to book
Ujjain is one of the holiest cities in India, in Madhya Pradesh, counted among the seven places of salvation. Its heart is the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, and spiritual life also centres on the ghats of the Shipra River, where fire ceremonies take place at dusk. It is also the site of the great Kumbh Mela festival and of the historic Vedh Shala observatory. The choice of stays is dense and mostly budget: from guesthouses and homestays through simple hotels to a few upper-tier properties. Guests usually stay a short time, a day or two, in the rhythm of a pilgrimage. This list holds 691 properties. Below you will find the dates with lower rates, prices by property type and specific addresses with figures.
When booking in Ujjain costs the least
Prices follow the religious calendar and the weather. By far the dearest stretch is February, around the Mahashivratri festival at the Mahakaleshwar Temple, when crowds of pilgrims arrive and rates can run several times higher. The cheapest time is April, at the start of the hot pre-monsoon season, when traffic thins and average rates drop sharply. The most pleasant time to sightsee is the cooler months from October to March, with mild weather and the festival season. Across the week the lowest rates usually fall on Sunday. For February and the major festivals, book ahead, usually about a month in advance.
What a night costs by property type
The spread is moderate, since the city runs mostly on pilgrims and most stays are budget. Indicative nightly rates:

Where to stay in Ujjain
The area you pick depends on the purpose of the trip. The area around the Mahakaleshwar Temple and the Shipra ghats, including Ram Ghat, is the historic pilgrimage centre, with walking access to the main shrines and the evening river ceremonies. Freeganj is the more commercial part near Ujjain Junction railway station, with restaurants, shops and a choice of hotels, handy for business travellers and those who value good connections. Around the city the easiest way to get around is by auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw, and by hired taxi for longer trips. The narrow streets around the temples are best covered on foot.
Which Ujjain hotel fits whom
- Pilgrims. The handiest are hotels near the Mahakaleshwar Temple and Ram Ghat, with walking access to the morning prayers and the evening fire ceremonies on the Shipra.
- Families. Freeganj with its more modern amenities and access to the station is good. For outings, the Vedh Shala observatory with its large astronomical instruments, the Bade Ganeshji temple and Vikram Park with its green spaces work well.
- Couples. For a trip for two, hotels by Ram Ghat are good, with the evening river ceremonies and a quiet early-morning visit to the Mahakaleshwar Temple.
- For work. Freeganj is the most practical, the main commercial part with modern hotels and good access, away from the heaviest crowds by the temples.
- On a budget. Guesthouses and homestays are the cheapest, from about INR 700 a night.

When Ujjain gets more expensive
You pay the most around the religious festivals, with the peak in February, near Mahashivratri, when pilgrims flock to the Mahakaleshwar Temple. Prices also stay high during other major festivals and on days of important ceremonies. Off season, in hot April and the monsoon, it is clearly cheaper. The cooler months from October to March are the most pleasant to sightsee, but this is also the festival season, so prices can be higher.
