Hotels in Trieste: prices and the best time to book
Trieste is an elegant Adriatic port near the Slovenian border, often called Italy's answer to Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here, leaving the monumental Piazza Unità d'Italia opening onto the sea, the Miramare Castle on a headland and Viennese cafes serving first-rate coffee. Most stays are in hotels and apartments in the centre and in rooms for rent by the station, and prices are quoted in euros. Our list covers 979 properties. Below you will find real nightly rates, the cheapest dates and a short guide to the area.
When to book for the lowest price
In Trieste the weather and the events calendar decide the price. It is cheapest in winter, with the lowest rates around February, when the city runs at an easy cafe pace and the drop against the peak can reach a half. It is priciest in the warmer half of the year, spring and early autumn, when the weather suits walks along the waterfront and the October Barcolana regatta draws the crowds. Across the week, Saturday tends to be the cheapest day to arrive and Friday the priciest. It pays to lock in a room about a month ahead. A stay here usually runs three days, longer if you take trips to the Karst plateau or along the coast.
How much a stay in Trieste costs by property type
Most of it comes down to standard and how close to Piazza Unità d'Italia you want to sleep. A room for rent or a studio starts at a few tens of euros a night, a three-star hotel in the centre costs more, and a design boutique or a five-star palace on the main square runs the most. The rates below are real starting prices per night from current offers.
| Property type | Price per night (from) |
| Rooms for rent and budget | from approx. €60 |
| Apartments and studios | from approx. €75 |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. €95 |
| 4-star and design hotels | from approx. €150 |
| 5-star and premium hotels | from approx. €185 |

Which hotel suits whom
- Couples and a boutique stay. For a romantic trip, small places in the old town are good, such as Boutique Hotel Albero Nascosto or the adults-only Hotel Miramare with a private spa by the sea, close to the waterfront and the cafes.
- Families. Handy options are apartments and studios with a kitchenette in the centre, near Piazza Unità d'Italia and the Grand Canal. The family room is one of the more booked types in town, and kids will enjoy the Miramare Castle with its park and a ferry ride across the bay.
- Budget. The cheapest sleep is in rooms for rent by the station and in the centre, such as Affittacamere Alla Stazione or Affittacamere Berzi, within a walk of the main square.
- By the station and in transit. The Borgo Teresiano district around the Grand Canal and the main station is the handiest base for connections and trips around the region, with hotels such as DoubleTree by Hilton or Hotel Continentale a few minutes from the station.

Where to stay
The most impressive place to stay is around Piazza Unità d'Italia and in the historic Cavana district, close to the waterfront, the cafes and the main sights. Handier for visitors is the Borgo Teresiano district by the Grand Canal, next to the main station, with easy transit around the region. Up the hill, around San Giusto castle and cathedral and the Roman theatre remains, you stay quieter, with views over the city. You get around Trieste on foot, by bus and tram, and for trips to Miramare, Muggia, Grignano or Aquileia a bus, the Delfino Verde ferry or a car helps. The Ronchi dei Legionari airport lies out of town.
When Trieste is more expensive
The season in Trieste is set by the Adriatic weather and the events calendar. The highest prices fall in the warmer half of the year, spring and early autumn, when the waterfront and the squares are lively. Prices also climb around big events, above all the October Barcolana regatta, one of the largest sailing gatherings in the world, plus the film festival and concerts on Piazza Unità. It is calmest and cheapest in winter, around February, when the city lives mostly on its cafes, museums and architecture.
