Hotels in Toronto: prices, timing and areas
Toronto is Canada's largest city and one of the most multicultural in the world, where residents speak over a hundred languages and districts like Kensington Market, Chinatown and Greektown each have their own character. People come here for business, theatre and concerts, for the CN Tower and the museums, and guests stay about four nights on average. This list has 819 properties, from a hostel bed to five stars on the waterfront. Below is what really drives the price of a stay in Toronto: the month, the day of the week and the district.
When to book a stay in Toronto for less
Toronto is cheapest in early spring. March is usually the bottom of the market, as winter eases and the influx of guests has not started. February is the priciest, in the middle of the winter events season, when rates can run noticeably higher. This is a business city, so the arrival day works differently from a resort: Sunday is the cheapest, Wednesday the most expensive, since midweek prices are pushed up by work travel. You can book fairly late, as the best rates show up around a week before the date, though for big events it pays to be earlier.
What a stay costs by property type
The price spread in Toronto is wide, since a hostel bed and a family apartment downtown are worlds apart. The cheapest sleep is in hostels and one-star places and in homestays on the outskirts; you pay the most for five stars in Yorkville or the Entertainment District. Below are indicative nightly rates for two.
| Property type | Indicative price per night (from) |
| Hostel bed or one-star place | from approx. CAD 105 |
| Two-star hotel | from approx. CAD 179 |
| Three-star hotel | from approx. CAD 249 |
| Four-star hotel | from approx. CAD 355 |
| Family room | from approx. CAD 398 |
| Five-star hotel | from approx. CAD 611 |

Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more
The priciest and most popular is Downtown, the heart of the city with the Financial District, the theatres and the CN Tower within a walk, where the average rate runs about a fifth above the city figure. The Entertainment District and Yorkville draw luxury and the highest prices. The cheapest sleep is in the West End, often about a quarter below the average, and in North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough on the outskirts. Toronto has an efficient TTC subway and streetcars, so a base further out near a station still reaches everything in a quarter of an hour.
Which stay in Toronto suits whom
- First time in Toronto. Downtown is the easiest base, close to Union Station and the CN Tower. From here you can walk or take the subway to most of the sights and theatres.
- For families. Apartments with a kitchen and hotels near the attractions like Ripley's Aquarium, the Royal Ontario Museum or High Park. The subway and streetcars make getting around with children easy.
- For couples. Boutique and design hotels in the Entertainment District and on Queen Street West, plus elegant places in Yorkville. A short trip from there for dinner and a night out.
- Business travel. Hotels in the Financial District and around Union Station, close to the offices and the convention centre. Wednesday tends to be the priciest precisely because of the business traffic.
- By the water. Places by the Harbourfront and Queens Quay, with lake views and a walk to the CN Tower. The waterfront comes alive in summer.
- Near the airport. Hotels around Pearson (YYZ) in Mississauga and Etobicoke, many with a free shuttle, suit an early flight. The UP Express train runs from here to Union Station.
