Where to stay in Rouen

The city is compact and easy on foot. Most hotels cluster in the hypercentre around the cathedral and the Gros-Horloge pedestrian street, close to the landmarks and restaurants. The area by the Gare de Rouen Rive Droite is handy for train trips, and it is cheaper to sleep on the Seine's left bank, in the Saint-Sever district, a few minutes from the centre. Getting around is easy by bus or by bike along the river. Rouen also makes a good base for day trips to the Étretat cliffs and the port of Honfleur.

When Rouen gets expensive

Rouen's price calendar can be unusual. January is the priciest, when business demand runs high and rooms in the small centre are scarce. Tourist traffic grows in summer and around big events like the carnival, the Festival des Arts de la Rue street-arts festival and the December Christmas market. It is quietest and cheapest in February, away from the demand peaks. Note too that some old-town restaurants and shops keep reduced hours on Mondays and Tuesdays.
