Its heart is the Molos seafront promenade and the mediaeval castle in the old town, and on the way to the resorts you pass Dasoudi and Ladies Mile beaches. Behind the city rise the Troodos mountains with their vineyards, home of the sweet Commandaria wine. This is a warm-season resort, so prices follow the beach season. The most visitors and the highest rates fall in the warm half of the year, peaking in summer, when the sea is at its best and Dasoudi and Ladies Mile beaches are full. Winter is calmer and clearly cheaper, with the bottom of the range usually in January, though the February carnival lifts it for a few days. The day of the week matters too: midweek is cheapest, around Tuesday, while Friday and the weekend are the priciest, when guests arrive from Nicosia and Larnaca. The cheapest base closest to the sights is the old town. From here you can walk to the castle, the Molos promenade, the marina and the tavernas, and a stay starts with reasonably priced studios. Around the marina and along Molos it is more modern and boutique, with waterfront dining. For the beach, aim for Germasogeia by Dasoudi, where family hotels have direct access to the sea. The priciest and most resort-like strip is Agios Tychonas to the east, with five-star hotels such as Amathus, Four Seasons and AMARA. The business district around Makarios Avenue suits a work trip. The easiest base is by Dasoudi Beach in Germasogeia, with shallow water and family hotels. In town, children enjoy the Municipal Gardens with playgrounds and the Fasouri Watermania water park just outside the city.
Most people book about five nights. Two or three days cover the marina, the Molos promenade and the old town with the castle, and the rest is best spent on the beaches and on a trip to the Kourion ruins or the Troodos mountain vineyards.
