Stays in Greetsiel: prices and the best time to book
Greetsiel is a picturesque fishing village on the North Sea coast, in East Frisia in Lower Saxony. You will know it by its historic shrimp-boat harbour, twin windmills, red-brick houses and canals with small boats. The local speciality is fresh shrimp served in a roll, the Krabbenbrötchen. Accommodation is small hotels, guesthouses and holiday homes, mostly by the harbour and along the canals. The village is compact and largely car-free, so you walk here, and the flat dykes are made for cycling. Two or three days is enough for the harbour, the windmills and the shrimp, and four with cycling trips along the dykes and the Wadden Sea mudflats. This list holds 682 properties. Below you will find the dates with lower rates, prices by property type and specific addresses with figures.
When booking in Greetsiel costs the least
The price calendar here is unusual. Most visitors come in summer, from June to August, when it is warmest, around 15 to 25 degrees, and the village is busy with festivals. Prices, though, can be highest in autumn, especially in October, which coincides with the German autumn school holidays and the potato festival. November and winter are the cheapest, out of season. Across the week the lowest rates are in mid-week, and Saturday is the priciest, as the weekend draws the most arrivals. For summer and the autumn holidays it pays to book ahead, as the stock is small and fills quickly.
What a night costs by property type
The spread is not huge, as this is a small village, but from a guesthouse to a boutique hotel the difference is clear. Indicative nightly rates:
| Property type | Indicative price per night (from) |
| Guesthouse or budget stay | from approx. € 87 |
| Room or garni hotel | from approx. € 115 |
| Three-star hotel by the harbour | from approx. € 140 |
| Upper-tier hotel by the canal | from approx. € 185 |
| Boutique hotel | from approx. € 230 |
Indicative rates for a double room, depending on dates and standard. During the autumn holidays and on Saturday they can run clearly higher. Check the real amount for your dates in the search above.
Where to stay in Greetsiel
The handiest area for a first visit is the centre by the harbour, within walking distance of the red-brick houses, the seafood restaurants and the fishing boats. It is quieter and closer to the cycle routes around the twin windmills, where the flat paths along the canals and dykes begin. The whole village is compact and largely car-free, so you get around Greetsiel on foot, a bicycle is useful for the dykes and the Pilsum Lighthouse, and a boat takes you along the canals. A car is easiest for the neighbouring towns and the Wadden Sea.
Which Greetsiel stay fits whom
- Families. A stay by the harbour works well, in the pedestrian zone, close to a boat trip along the canals. The flat terrain is ideal for a bicycle with a child trailer, and the day is filled by the boats in the harbour, the windmills and a walk along the dyke.
- Couples. For a trip for two, the canals with their brick houses and the twin windmills are good, and in the evening a plate of shrimp at a restaurant by the water, overlooking the boats.
- Active travellers. The flat dykes suit longer cycling routes along the North Sea, to the Pilsum Lighthouse and out for walks on the Wadden Sea mudflats, and kayaking and birdwatching are good too.
- With a dog and for longer. Many holiday homes are pet-friendly and suit a stay of several days, when you want a kitchen and quiet out of season.
- On a budget. Guesthouses and simple stays away from the harbour are the cheapest, from about € 87 a night.

When Greetsiel gets more expensive
Most guests come in summer, with the harbour festival and long weekends, but the highest prices usually fall in autumn, in October, when the German autumn holidays and the potato festival overlap. Weekends, especially Saturdays, are dearer than weekdays all year. Spring outside the peak and November are gentler on the wallet, and winter is the quietest and cheapest. Bear in mind this is a small seaside village, so the holiday and festival calendar sets the price, and the stock fills quickly.
