Most properties sit on Upolu island around Apia and along the south coast. Savai'i is quieter and more intimate. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Apia. The capital on Upolu island and the widest choice of stays, from boutique hotels to budget properties. A base for reaching the rest of the islands.
• Lalomanu. A famous white-sand beach in southern Upolu. Plenty of seaside fales and small lodges.
• Manase. A quiet seaside village on Savai'i island. Bungalows and fales right by the water.
• Faleolo. The area around the main airport on Upolu, handy for a first or last night.
• Savai'i (Tuasivi). The larger, quieter island with waterfalls and caves. Fewer properties, more nature.

• O Le Pupu-Pue National Park. One of the best examples of Samoan rainforest, on Upolu. Mountain tracks and plenty of birds.
• Lalomanu Beach. White sand and azure water full of tropical fish. Ideal for snorkelling.
• Apia. The Maketi Fou market, the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum and the Samoa Cultural Village. A good introduction to local life.
• Savai'i. A peaceful island with waterfalls, caves and kayaking. A glimpse of the traditional way of life.

A meal at a local restaurant costs a few tala per person, and traditional fales often include breakfast and dinner. Larger hotels take cards, but cash in tala matters at markets and in smaller places. ATMs are found mainly in Apia and at the airport.

When is the best time to visit Samoa

The climate is warm and tropical. The dry season from May to October is the best and most popular time to visit, with temperatures around 25 to 30 degrees. May tends to be the cheapest, while February in the wet season is the most expensive in the price data. Expect more humidity and short downpours in the wet season.

Getting to and around Samoa

International flights land at Faleolo Airport on Upolu, served by Samoa Airways, Air New Zealand and Fiji Airways among others. Apia is also a stop on cruise itineraries.
