The islands combine beaches, nature and local culture, so it is easy to match a trip to your interests.
The currency is the US dollar, which keeps payments simple. ATMs are easy to find in the main towns on all three islands, and cards are taken at larger hotels and restaurants. A meal at a cheaper restaurant is about $16.50, and a couple of days of groceries about $75-80. This is a pricier destination than the average Caribbean island, so it pays to plan your budget ahead.
The best time is from December to April, when the weather is good and most services and activities are open. That is also the peak season and the highest prices, led by December. September tends to be the cheapest month. Summer and early autumn are the time to watch forecasts for hurricanes.
The islands are served by two airports: Cyril E King on St Thomas and Henry Rohlsen on St Croix. Most international flights land on St Thomas, usually with a layover in Miami. The islands are also a stop for large cruise ships, which dock at the Havensight and Crown Bay ports on St Thomas. Ferries run between the islands, with a one-way ticket from about $8. Vitran buses and domestic flights serve the islands too. You can rent a car from age 25, and remember that traffic drives on the left. Travellers from outside the US enter on a passport, and citizens of most countries do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
A few recognisable properties from different islands for reference:
September tends to be the cheapest month and December the most expensive, at the peak of the season. The best weather and the full range of services run from December to April, but prices are highest then. Booking ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
The most popular island is St Thomas, with the widest choice of hotels and the airport and cruise port. St John draws visitors with the national park and beaches, while St Croix offers historic Christiansted.
The highest rates are at resorts on St Thomas and St John. Guesthouses and stays on St Croix, especially outside peak season, are cheaper.
Travellers from outside the US enter on a valid passport. Citizens of most countries do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. The exact rules depend on your citizenship, so check the requirements before departure.
The currency is the US dollar, and cards are taken at larger hotels and restaurants. ATMs are in the main towns on all three islands. It is worth keeping some cash for ferries and small purchases.
