Uzbekistan brings together Silk Road monuments, desert and mountains, so it is easy to match a trip to your interests.
Daily costs are low. A cheap meal is about 38,000 UZS (around $4) per person, and a mid-range meal about 75,000 UZS (around $8). Credit and debit cards are taken at larger hotels and venues, but smaller shops and restaurants deal in cash in Uzbek som (UZS). It is worth keeping cash on hand, and larger bills are easier to settle in dollars.
Spring and autumn are best, with dry, mild weather that makes sightseeing pleasant. Summer can be very hot and winter cold. November tends to be the cheapest month and April the most expensive, when the weather and the tourist season are at their peak. Tuesday is usually the cheapest day to book, Saturday the priciest.
Most people arrive by plane, with the national Uzbekistan Airways serving dozens of cities, alongside carriers such as Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways and Emirates. Trains run in from Kazakhstan, some originating in Russia, all ending in Tashkent. A bus runs from Shymkent in Kazakhstan. Within the country there are comfortable trains, including high-speed services linking Tashkent with Samarkand and Bukhara, plus long-distance buses from the Abu Sahiy station. Tashkent has a 29-station metro, and Uzbekistan Airways operates domestic flights. Citizens of over 50 countries, including the EU, Australia and Canada, enter visa-free for 30 days, while others apply for an e-visa online.
