Where to stay in Ukraine: most popular cities

Ukraine splits into the historic cities of the west, the capital and the Black Sea coast. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Kyiv. The capital and the widest choice of hotels. Saint Sophia's Cathedral, Independence Square and a metro that makes sightseeing easy.
• Lviv. A cobbled centre, the opera house and St George's Cathedral. The largest selection of boutique hotels and townhouse stays.
• Odesa. A Black Sea port with the Potemkin Stairs and a funicular. Trams, trolleybuses and an airport with domestic flights.
• Kharkiv. A large eastern city with extensive transport and its own metro.

What to see in Ukraine

Ukraine combines historic cities, mountains and unusual sites, so it is easy to match a trip to your interests.

• Kyiv. Saint Sophia's Cathedral, the Pechersk Lavra and Independence Square. A good place to start.
• The architecture of Lviv. Cobbled lanes, St George's Cathedral and the view from Castle Hill.

A public transport ticket costs about 7 UAH, and a week of groceries about 1,000 UAH (around $40). Visa, Mastercard and Maestro are widely accepted, though cash is handy at markets.

When is the best time to visit Ukraine

Winters can be very cold. The most pleasant weather for sightseeing runs from May to September. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, skip July and August, when popular spots see the most visitors. Spring and early autumn pair warm days with lower prices.

Getting to and around Ukraine

By air, the most convenient option is the Kyiv airports, Boryspil and Zhuliany, with further airports in Lviv, Kharkiv and Odesa. Direct trains run from many European cities, including Warsaw, Vienna and Budapest, to Kyiv and Lviv. By car you can enter from Poland via Przemysl and from Slovakia, while buses (including FlixBus) link Ukraine with Poland, Slovakia and Moldova. Within the country there are Ukrainian Railways trains, long-distance buses and a metro in three cities, including Kyiv. Smaller towns run trams, trolleybuses and buses.
