Ukraine combines historic cities, mountains and unusual sites, so it is easy to match a trip to your interests.
Daily costs are low. A cheap meal is about 120 UAH (around $5), while a sit-down meal is about 250 UAH (around $10) per person. A public transport ticket costs about 7 UAH, and a week of groceries about 1,000 UAH (around $40). Visa, Mastercard and Maestro are widely accepted, though cash is handy at markets.
Winters can be very cold. The most pleasant weather for sightseeing runs from May to September. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, skip July and August, when popular spots see the most visitors. Spring and early autumn pair warm days with lower prices.
By air, the most convenient option is the Kyiv airports, Boryspil and Zhuliany, with further airports in Lviv, Kharkiv and Odesa. Direct trains run from many European cities, including Warsaw, Vienna and Budapest, to Kyiv and Lviv. By car you can enter from Poland via Przemysl and from Slovakia, while buses (including FlixBus) link Ukraine with Poland, Slovakia and Moldova. Within the country there are Ukrainian Railways trains, long-distance buses and a metro in three cities, including Kyiv. Smaller towns run trams, trolleybuses and buses.
