Where to stay in Taiwan: most popular cities

Taiwan has a network of large cities linked by high-speed rail, each with its own character. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Taipei. The capital and the widest choice of hotels, from hostels to 5-star. Taipei 101, night markets and temples.
• Kaohsiung. A port city in the south, with a modern waterfront and a warmer climate.
• Taichung. A city in the centre of the island, a base for trips into the mountains and to Sun Moon Lake.
• Tainan. The oldest city in Taiwan, with monuments and cuisine, the cultural heart of the country.
• Taoyuan. Around the main airport, handy for a first night or a layover.

What to see in Taiwan

Taiwan combines cities, mountains, temples and cuisine, so it is easy to match a trip to your interests.

• The night markets. The heart of Taiwanese cuisine, dumplings, oyster omelettes and bubble tea, best in Taipei and Kaohsiung.
• Taroko National Park. A marble gorge and mountain trails, one of the finest landscapes on the island.
• Jade Mountain (Yushan). The highest peak in Taiwan, with a panorama over the whole national park.
• The temples. Over fifteen thousand temples, including Longshan in Taipei, a blend of Buddhism and Taoism.
• Sun Moon Lake. A mountain lake in the centre of the island, popular for cycling and boat trips.

How much does a trip to Taiwan cost

Beyond the room, prices are moderate, and night-market food is very cheap. The currency is the New Taiwan dollar. Cards are accepted in hotels and shops, but cash is handy at markets and in smaller venues. ATMs are everywhere, and you can pay for public transport easily with an EasyCard.

When is the best time to visit Taiwan

The most pleasant time is autumn and winter from October to February, when it is dry and not too hot. Summer can be hot and humid, and typhoons are possible from July to September. Spring is green but rainy. Room prices are lowest in August and highest in December, around holidays and festivals.

Getting to and around Taiwan

The main airport is Taoyuan (TPE) near Taipei, with smaller flights served by Songshan in the capital and Kaohsiung in the south. Around the island the most convenient option is the high-speed rail (HSR), which links the western cities in a few hours, plus regular trains. The cities have an MRT metro, buses and bike-share. You can pay for tickets and rides with an EasyCard. A ferry also runs from mainland China.
