Hotels in Tajikistan: your guide to where to stay

Tajikistan is a mountainous country in the heart of Central Asia, with the peaks of the Pamirs, deep-blue lakes and remote villages. It is a destination for lovers of mountains and trekking, with the capital Dushanbe as a base. The choice of stays includes hostels, city hotels and homestays in mountain villages. We list 216 properties across 28 cities. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.

How much does a hotel in Tajikistan cost?

The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest month is usually February, while August, at the peak of the mountain season, is the priciest. Chain hotels in Dushanbe cost more than guesthouses and homestays. Booking ahead usually brings better rates.

Where to stay in Tajikistan: most popular cities

Most travel passes through the capital and the northern cities, with bases in the Pamirs too. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

  • Dushanbe. The capital and the widest choice of hotels, from hostels to 5-star. A base before heading into the mountains.
  • Khujand. The second city, in the north, in the Fergana Valley, with a big bazaar and rich history.
  • Panjakent. A town near the Uzbek border, a gateway to the Fann Mountains and the Sarazm site.
  • Khorog. The main town of the Pamirs, a base for the famous Pamir Highway and high-mountain trips.
  • Kulob. A historic city in the south, a stop on the routes towards the Pamirs.

Nightly rates vary between cities. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:

What to see in Tajikistan

Tajikistan is above all mountains and authentic culture, so a trip combines the city with wild nature.

  • The Pamirs and the Pamir Highway. Known as the Roof of the World, one of the highest road routes on the globe, over passes above 4 000 metres.
  • Lake Karakul. A high-altitude, deep-blue lake in a crater, an almost lunar landscape.
  • Homestays. The best way to get to know the country, staying with Tajik families in mountain villages.
  • The bazaars. Full of fruit and handicrafts, most colourful in summer, authentic centres of daily life.
  • Dushanbe. The capital with Rudaki Avenue, museums and parks, a good start before the mountains.

How much does a trip to Tajikistan cost

Beyond the room, prices are low. Buying basic groceries in a shop costs a few dozen somoni. In Dushanbe you can easily pay by card, but outside the capital cash is the basis. ATMs are in the capital and the larger northern cities, so it is worth withdrawing a reserve of cash before heading to remote areas. The currency is the somoni.

When is the best time to visit Tajikistan

The best time is the months from June to September, when the mountains are warm and the passes are open, which is the best time for trekking. The cities can be hot then. In winter the high mountains are inaccessible. Room prices are lowest in February and highest in August. The Pamir Highway is mostly accessible in summer.

Getting to and around Tajikistan

The main airport is Dushanbe (DYU), with connections from Russia, Istanbul, Frankfurt and Dubai, and a second international airport in Bokhtar. Citizens of many countries get an e-visa before travelling, while residents of CIS countries enter visa-free. Around the country you travel mainly by shared taxis and minibuses, and on longer routes it is most convenient to hire a car with a driver. Roads can be in poor condition, especially in the mountains. There is also a train from Moscow.
