Book a transferEswatini, formerly Swaziland, is a small kingdom in southern Africa, surrounded by South Africa and Mozambique. This mountainous country is known for its wildlife reserves, traditional festivals and the friendly Ezulwini Valley. The choice of stays includes lodges in the parks, city hotels and guesthouses. We list 175 properties across 21 cities. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.
The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest months are usually January and March, while July is the priciest. Lodges in the parks and resorts in the Ezulwini Valley cost more than guesthouses in the towns. Booking ahead usually brings better rates.
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Guesthouses and budget stays | from approx. 360 SZL |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. 1 000 SZL |
| 4-star hotels and lodges | from approx. 1 650 SZL |
| Upper-tier resorts | from approx. 2 900 SZL |

Life in the country centres on the capital and the central valley, with bases by the parks too. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:
Nightly rates vary between cities. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:
| City | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Mbabane | from approx. 500 SZL |
| Ezulwini Valley | from approx. 680 SZL |
| Lobamba | from approx. 590 SZL |
| Manzini | from approx. 460 SZL |
| Matsapha | from approx. 480 SZL |
Eswatini focuses on nature and living culture. The country is small, so you can cover the sights in a few days.
Beyond the room, prices are moderate. A meal in a local restaurant is inexpensive and park entry is affordable. The currency is the lilangeni, with the South African rand accepted on equal terms. Cards work in hotels and larger shops, while cash is handy in smaller places. You will find ATMs in Mbabane, Manzini and the Ezulwini Valley.
The dry season from May to September is the best for safari, as animals gather at waterholes and the vegetation is low. Summer from November to March can be rainy but lush green. Room prices are lowest in January and March, and highest in July. August brings the Umhlanga festival, worth bearing in mind when planning a trip.
The main airport is King Mswati III (SHO) near Manzini, with connections mainly from Johannesburg in South Africa. Many travellers also arrive by car from South Africa or Mozambique through the border crossings. Around the country a car is the most convenient, as public transport relies on minibuses with irregular schedules. Distances are short, and you can cover most of the country in a few days. The main roads are in good condition.
A few recognisable properties from different parts of the country for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in January and March. July, at the peak of the dry season and safari season, tends to be the most expensive. Booking a few weeks ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
The most popular is the capital Mbabane, followed closely by the tourist Ezulwini Valley with the most resorts and attractions.
The highest rates are at the Ezulwini Valley resorts and the lodges by the parks. Guesthouses in Manzini and Mbabane are cheaper.
Citizens of many countries enter Eswatini visa-free for a tourist stay of up to 30 days. A valid passport is required. The details depend on your citizenship, so check before you travel.
