• Simpson Bay. The busiest tourist area, with plenty of resorts, restaurants and nightlife. Close to the airport and the marina.

The island is small, so you can cover the sights in a few days. It combines beaches, shopping and a touch of history.

• Maho Beach. The island's most famous attraction, planes coming in to land just above beachgoers by Princess Juliana airport.
• Front Street in Philipsburg. A promenade full of duty-free shops with jewellery and fashion brands, a shopper's paradise.
• Fort Amsterdam. A fortress from 1631 above the bay, today also a refuge for brown pelicans.
• Rockland Estate. An adventure park with one of the steepest ziplines in the world, a descent from the mountain forest.
• The beaches. Mullet Bay, Great Bay and quiet coves in the east of the island, such as Dawn Beach.

Beyond the room, prices are higher, as this is a popular Caribbean destination. Dinner in a restaurant is about 40 USD per person. Cards are widely accepted in restaurants and shops, but cash is handy for buses and taxis. The official currency is the Antillean guilder, though in practice you can pay in US dollars everywhere. ATMs are available, though foreign withdrawals may carry fees.

When is the best time to visit Sint Maarten

The best time is the dry season from December to May, when temperatures reach 27-29 degrees. Outside that period rain is not much of an obstacle, as it usually rains only ten to twelve days a month. January and February bring Carnival, with concerts and street barbecues. Room prices are lowest in October and highest in February.

Getting to and around Sint Maarten

The main airport is Princess Juliana (SXM), with direct flights from Europe, North America and the Caribbean, including KLM, Air France, Delta and JetBlue. The local airline Winair links the island with neighbouring islands. From the French part of the island, from Marigot, buses run to Philipsburg, with no border checks to cross. Around the island you get around by minibus, taxi or a rented car, available at the airport. Distances are short.
