Book a transferSint Maarten is the Dutch part of the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, shared with France. It is famous for its beaches, duty-free shops and an airport where planes pass just over the heads of beachgoers. The choice of stays includes resorts by the bays, boutique hotels and apartments. We list 257 properties across 13 areas of the island. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.
The price depends on the standard, the location and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest month is usually October, while February, at the peak of the season and Carnival, is the priciest. Beachfront resorts cost more than apartments inland. Booking ahead usually brings better rates.
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Apartments and budget stays | from approx. 56 USD |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. 95 USD |
| 4-star hotels | from approx. 160 USD |
| 5-star beachfront resorts | from approx. 380 USD |

Island life centres on a handful of bays, each with its own character. These are the areas travellers choose most often:
Nightly rates vary between areas. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:
| Area | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Simpson Bay | from approx. 95 USD |
| Philipsburg | from approx. 75 USD |
| Maho Beach | from approx. 110 USD |
| Cole Bay | from approx. 85 USD |
| Little Bay | from approx. 100 USD |
The island is small, so you can cover the sights in a few days. It combines beaches, shopping and a touch of history.
Beyond the room, prices are higher, as this is a popular Caribbean destination. Dinner in a restaurant is about 40 USD per person. Cards are widely accepted in restaurants and shops, but cash is handy for buses and taxis. The official currency is the Antillean guilder, though in practice you can pay in US dollars everywhere. ATMs are available, though foreign withdrawals may carry fees.
The best time is the dry season from December to May, when temperatures reach 27-29 degrees. Outside that period rain is not much of an obstacle, as it usually rains only ten to twelve days a month. January and February bring Carnival, with concerts and street barbecues. Room prices are lowest in October and highest in February.
The main airport is Princess Juliana (SXM), with direct flights from Europe, North America and the Caribbean, including KLM, Air France, Delta and JetBlue. The local airline Winair links the island with neighbouring islands. From the French part of the island, from Marigot, buses run to Philipsburg, with no border checks to cross. Around the island you get around by minibus, taxi or a rented car, available at the airport. Distances are short.
A few recognisable properties from different bays for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in October, outside the peak of the season. February, during Carnival and the height of the dry season, tends to be the most expensive. Booking a few weeks ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
The most popular is Simpson Bay, with the most resorts, restaurants and nightlife, close to the airport. The capital Philipsburg is also a favourite.
The highest rates are at the beachfront resorts, especially by Maho Beach and Simpson Bay. Apartments in Cole Bay and guesthouses in Philipsburg are cheaper.
Travellers from the Schengen Area, the Netherlands, the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom enter without a visa. Citizens of many other countries can stay up to 90 days. A valid passport is required. The details depend on your citizenship.
Yes. Many properties offer pay-at-hotel and free cancellation. Cards are widely accepted, but it is worth carrying cash in dollars for buses and taxis.
