Book a transferEl Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, yet it has volcanoes, cloud forest and some of the best Pacific waves for surfing. The coast draws surfers, while the interior tempts with colonial towns. The choice of stays is wide, from hostels to seaside resorts. We list 1 126 properties across 130 cities. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.
The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. Seaside resorts and business hotels in the capital cost more than hostels on the surf beaches. El Salvador uses the dollar, so prices are easy to compare. Booking ahead usually brings better rates.
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Hostels and budget stays | from approx. 26 USD |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. 62 USD |
| 4-star hotels | from approx. 110 USD |
| 5-star hotels and resorts | from approx. 180 USD |

El Salvador splits clearly into the capital, the surf coast and the colonial interior. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:
Nightly rates vary between cities. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:
| City | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| San Salvador | from approx. 34 USD |
| La Libertad and El Tunco | from approx. 30 USD |
| El Zonte | from approx. 28 USD |
| Suchitoto | from approx. 32 USD |
| Santa Ana | from approx. 27 USD |
El Salvador combines coast, volcanoes and Mayan history, so it is easy to match a trip to your interests.
Beyond the room, prices are moderate. A meal in a local restaurant is about 5 USD per person. El Salvador uses the US dollar, so it is worth carrying notes smaller than 20 dollars, as change can be tricky. Visa cards are the most widely accepted, with ATMs at banks and in malls. A bus ticket costs from a few cents to a few dollars.
The dry season runs from November to April and is the best time to travel, with about 23 degrees on the coast and cooler inland. Surfing is good all year, but the biggest waves come in the rainy season. Sea turtle nesting runs from July to November. Room prices rise at the peak of the dry season and over the holidays.
The main airport is San Salvador (SAL), serving Avianca and US carriers such as American, Delta and United, and Iberia from Europe. By car you enter on the Pan-American Highway from Guatemala and Honduras, and luxury coaches like Tica Bus link the countries of the region. Around the country runs a dense network of cheap buses, often former US school buses, plus taxis. Cars can be hired in San Salvador and San Miguel. Most roads are paved, though signposting can be unclear.
A few recognisable properties from different parts of the country for reference:
Prices are lowest outside the peak of the dry season and the holidays. December to April and the festive period tend to be the most expensive. Booking a few weeks ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
The most popular is the capital San Salvador, which has the widest choice of hotels, followed closely by the surf coast around La Libertad and El Tunco.
The highest rates are at the seaside resorts and in the best San Salvador hotels. Hostels on the surf beaches and smaller cities such as Santa Ana are cheaper.
Travellers from the European Union, the USA, Australia and most of South America do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. A passport valid for at least six months is required. The details depend on your citizenship.
