Hotels in Suriname: your guide to where to stay

Suriname is the smallest country in South America, once known as Dutch Guiana. Most of the population and hotels cluster in the capital Paramaribo on the Suriname River, while dense jungle covers the rest of the country. The choice of stays is small but varied, from hostels to lodges deep in the rainforest. We list 256 properties across 20 cities. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.

How much does a hotel in Suriname cost?

The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest months are usually July and August, while January is the priciest. Hotels in central Paramaribo cost more than guesthouses on the edge of town. Booking ahead usually brings better rates.

Where to stay in Suriname: most popular places

Life in the country is centred on the capital, but there are smaller hubs and bases for jungle trips too. These are the places travellers choose most often:

  • Paramaribo. The capital and almost the entire choice of hotels, from hostels to 4-star properties. A historic riverside centre on the UNESCO list.
  • Nieuw Nickerie. The second largest town, in the west near the Guyana border. A quiet base with lower prices.
  • Albina. A town on the Marowijne River by the French Guiana border, a ferry crossing point.
  • Upper Suriname River. Lodges and Saramaka villages amid the jungle, popular for multi-day trips.
  • Galibi Reserve. A stretch of coast with a sea turtle sanctuary, a base for wildlife watching.

Nightly rates vary between places. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:

What to see in Suriname

Suriname is above all nature and a multicultural capital, so a trip combines the city with the jungle.

  • Paramaribo. Wooden colonial architecture, the St Peter and Paul cathedral and the waterfront, a UNESCO site.
  • The Upper Suriname River. Canoeing or boating, Saramaka villages amid the jungle, one of the most peaceful corners of the country.
  • Voltzberg Mountain. A granite dome and a hike of several hours with views over endless green, with monkeys and birds along the way.
  • Galibi Reserve. A sea turtle sanctuary, with green turtles nesting from February to May and leatherbacks from April to July.
  • The Rum House. A look at how local rum is made, with a tasting, a popular stop in Paramaribo.

How much does a trip to Suriname cost

Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A cheap meal is about 30 SRD, a mid-range meal about 150 SRD. A local bus ticket is around 2 SRD. Cards are accepted in larger hotels and venues, but cash remains the basis in smaller places. The currency is the Surinamese dollar.

When is the best time to visit Suriname

The best times are the dry seasons: a shorter one in February and March and a longer one from August to November. Trips inland are easier then. Room prices are lowest in July and August, and highest in January. Turtle nesting at Galibi falls in spring and early summer, worth bearing in mind when planning a trip.

Getting to and around Suriname

The main airport is Johan Adolf Pengel (PBM) near Paramaribo, with a daily connection to the Netherlands and flights to neighbouring countries and the USA. There are no direct buses from neighbouring countries, but from Guyana and French Guiana you reach the border towns and cross the rivers by ferry. Around the country you travel by bus and shared taxis, while a 4x4 is handy for the interior. Local airlines Gumair and Bluewing serve smaller airports, usually from Paramaribo.

Example hotels in Suriname

A few recognisable properties from the capital and around for reference:

  • Ramada by Wyndham Princess Paramaribo by the river (from approx. 3 100 SRD).
