Book a transferSuriname is the smallest country in South America, once known as Dutch Guiana. Most of the population and hotels cluster in the capital Paramaribo on the Suriname River, while dense jungle covers the rest of the country. The choice of stays is small but varied, from hostels to lodges deep in the rainforest. We list 256 properties across 20 cities. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.
The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest months are usually July and August, while January is the priciest. Hotels in central Paramaribo cost more than guesthouses on the edge of town. Booking ahead usually brings better rates.
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Hostels and budget stays | from approx. 850 SRD |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. 2 500 SRD |
| 4-star hotels | from approx. 3 900 SRD |
| Upper-tier hotels and lodges | from approx. 5 400 SRD |

Life in the country is centred on the capital, but there are smaller hubs and bases for jungle trips too. These are the places travellers choose most often:
Nightly rates vary between places. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:
| Place | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Paramaribo | from approx. 1 200 SRD |
| Nieuw Nickerie | from approx. 1 600 SRD |
| Albina | from approx. 1 400 SRD |
| Upper Suriname River (lodges) | from approx. 2 000 SRD |
| Galibi area | from approx. 1 500 SRD |
Suriname is above all nature and a multicultural capital, so a trip combines the city with the jungle.
Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A cheap meal is about 30 SRD, a mid-range meal about 150 SRD. A local bus ticket is around 2 SRD. Cards are accepted in larger hotels and venues, but cash remains the basis in smaller places. The currency is the Surinamese dollar.
The best times are the dry seasons: a shorter one in February and March and a longer one from August to November. Trips inland are easier then. Room prices are lowest in July and August, and highest in January. Turtle nesting at Galibi falls in spring and early summer, worth bearing in mind when planning a trip.
The main airport is Johan Adolf Pengel (PBM) near Paramaribo, with a daily connection to the Netherlands and flights to neighbouring countries and the USA. There are no direct buses from neighbouring countries, but from Guyana and French Guiana you reach the border towns and cross the rivers by ferry. Around the country you travel by bus and shared taxis, while a 4x4 is handy for the interior. Local airlines Gumair and Bluewing serve smaller airports, usually from Paramaribo.
A few recognisable properties from the capital and around for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in July and August. January tends to be the most expensive. Booking a few weeks ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
The most popular destination is the capital Paramaribo, where almost the entire choice of hotels is and the easiest base for the rest of the country.
The highest rates are in the best hotels of central Paramaribo and in the jungle lodges. Guesthouses on the edge of the capital and smaller towns are cheaper.
Citizens of around forty countries enter Suriname visa-free. Others need a visa, which some can get on arrival. It is usually a single-entry visa. The exact rules depend on your citizenship, so check before you travel.
Yes. Many properties offer pay-at-hotel and free cancellation. It is worth carrying cash, as it is the main payment method in smaller places.
