Hotels in San Marino: your guide to where to stay

San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world, surrounded entirely by Italy. Its historic centre sits on the slopes of Monte Titano, and the towers above the city are visible from afar. The choice of stays is small but comfortable. We list 62 properties across 5 towns: from hostels and guesthouses to 4-star hotels with a view over the valley. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular towns, season tips and transport notes.

How much does a hotel in San Marino cost?

The price depends on the standard, the location and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest month is usually April, while June and midsummer are the priciest. Rooms with a valley view tend to cost more. Booking ahead usually brings better rates.

Where to stay in San Marino: most popular towns

Most properties cluster in the historic centre, but it is worth considering the smaller towns at the foot of the mountain too. These are the places travellers choose most often:

  • San Marino (City). The historic centre on top of Monte Titano, within walking distance of the three towers and the main squares. The most hotels with a view, but also the highest prices.
  • Borgo Maggiore. A town at the foot of the mountain, linked to the centre by a cable car. Quieter and often cheaper than the summit.
  • Serravalle. The largest town in the country, closer to the Italian border. A good base if you travel by car.
  • Domagnano. A small town in the centre of the country, with intimate guesthouses at lower prices.
  • Dogana. Right by the border on the Rimini side, a handy spot for a first night after arriving from Italy.

Nightly rates vary between towns. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:

San Marino (City)from approx. 70 €
Borgo Maggiorefrom approx. 58 €
Serravallefrom approx. 54 €

What to see in San Marino

The country is small, so you can cover the main sights in one or two days. Most attractions sit within the walls on top of the mountain.

  • Torre Guaita. The oldest of the three towers on Monte Titano, dating from the 11th century. It offers a sweeping view over the valley to the Adriatic.
  • Basilica di San Marino. The main church of the country with its distinctive colonnade. It stands by one of the central squares.
  • Palazzo Pubblico. The town hall and seat of government on Piazza della Libertà, with a changing of the guard in season.
  • Museo di Stato. An archaeological collection running from the Neolithic to Greek, Roman and Egyptian cultures.
  • The three towers and wall walk. Guaita, Cesta and Montale linked by a ridge path, with panoramas on both sides.

How much does a trip to San Marino cost

San Marino lives on tourism, so eating out can be on the pricier side. A restaurant lunch is roughly 25-30 €, while groceries are cheaper. Cards are accepted almost everywhere and ATMs are easy to find. The currency is the euro. The cable car up Monte Titano costs just a few euro.

When is the best time to visit San Marino

The best weather runs from May to October, when temperatures reach about 18-24 degrees. July is especially popular thanks to the Medieval Days festival, which turns the old town into a medieval set. That is also the price peak. April is the cheapest and the weather is usually fine. Early autumn combines warm days with smaller crowds.

Getting to and around San Marino

You cannot reach San Marino by plane or train, as the country has no airport or railway. The nearest airport and station are in Rimini, Italy. From there a direct bus number 72 runs to the centre, taking about 50 minutes and costing around 5 €. By car you arrive via the SS72 road from Rimini, crossing the border without checks. Regional buses link the towns, and a cable car climbs to the summit from Borgo Maggiore. The streets within the walls are narrow, so it is best to leave the car in a car park and explore on foot.

Example hotels in San Marino

A few recognisable properties from different parts of the country for reference:

  • Hotel Titano and Hotel Cesare in central San Marino (near the squares, upper tier, from approx. 110 €).
  • Hotel Rosa and Hotel Joli in the historic city (popular, well rated, from approx. 66 €).
  • Hotel Dogana by the border and Garden Village San Marino outside the centre (from approx. 50 €).
