Where to stay in Slovakia: most popular cities

The country combines the capital, the eastern cities and the mountains. These are the destinations chosen most often:

• Bratislava. The capital on the Danube with a castle, an old town and museums. The widest choice of hotels and the arrival point.
• Košice. The country's second city in the east, with a beautiful old town and a calmer feel.
• Poprad. The gateway to the High Tatras, a base for skiing and hiking. Mountain hotels and guesthouses.
• Trenčín. A town with an impressive castle above the Váh, good for a short stop.
• The High Tatras (Štrbské Pleso, Tatranská Lomnica). Mountain resorts with huts and hotels at the foot of the peaks.

It is a compact country where vineyards, national parks and castles are all close together.

How much does a trip to Slovakia cost

The currency is the euro (EUR). Daily costs are moderate, with daily groceries a few to a dozen euros. Cards are accepted at larger hotels and venues, but at smaller places it is better to ask and to have cash. ATMs are more common in larger cities.

When is the best time to visit Slovakia

The months from June to August are good for festivals and hiking, if the heat does not bother you. September and October are the music-festival season, with milder weather and fewer crowds. Winter draws people to the Tatras for skiing. Booking is cheapest in January and most expensive in May.

Getting to and around Slovakia

Most flights land at Bratislava Airport, with airports in Košice and Poprad too. Bratislava has direct trains to Prague, Budapest and Vienna, and a riverboat runs from Vienna along the Danube. Within the country, you travel by train (from the cheap Osobný to IC and EC) and by bus. Bratislava and Košice have trams and trolleybuses, and the Tatras have electric trains. The motorways are good, so the country suits a road trip; a toll sticker is required.
