Where to stay in Palau: most popular places

Almost all accommodation is in and around Koror, the base for cruises and diving. These are the destinations chosen most often:

  • Koror. The largest city and the country's tourism hub, with the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and dive operators. The main base.
  • Airai. A neighbouring town by the airport, on Babeldaob island. Handy for the first and last night.
  • Meyungs. A waterfront part of Koror, with intimate properties and lagoon views.
  • Malakal. The port district of Koror, close to the marina and dive operators.
  • Peleliu. A quiet island known for its World War II relics, for those after calm.

What to see in Palau

This is a destination for ocean, diving and nature lovers, with several world-class sights.

  • Diving. The country's top attraction, with the famous Blue Corner Wall, one of the best dive sites in the world.
  • Jellyfish Lake. A lake where you swim among stingless jellyfish, a one-of-a-kind experience.
  • World War II relics. Peleliu island preserves tanks and remains of the Pacific war.
  • Badrulchau monoliths. Carved stone monoliths at least 2,000 years old, still an enigma.
  • The Milky Way. A bay of milky-blue water with white limestone mud, popular for a swim and photos.

How much does a trip to Palau cost

The currency is the US dollar (USD). Prices are high because most goods are imported. A cheap meal is about 18 USD, basic groceries about 10 USD. Cards are accepted at most hotels, especially in Koror, where there are ATMs too. Exchanging foreign currency can be tricky, so it is better to arrive with cash in dollars.

When is the best time to visit Palau

High season runs from December to March, with the best weather but also bigger crowds and higher prices. May, June and September are quieter, cheaper and the diving is less crowded. The shoulder season with rain and wind (April, July, August, October, November) can be tricky for divers, as some sites are then off-limits.

Getting to and around Palau

You reach the country at its single airport, Roman Tmetuchi near Koror, with regular flights from Guam, Manila, Seoul and Taipei. A Pristine Paradise Environmental Fee (about 100 USD) is added to every ticket. Public transport is limited, with essentially one bus route in Koror. The easiest way to get around is by taxi (negotiable fare) or rental car (an International Driving Permit and a minimum age of 21 are required). Government ferries serve the outer islands, with a ticket around 5 USD.
