Peru is about ancient civilisations, the Andes and the Amazon. A trip is easy to build around a few highlights.
Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A meal at a simple eatery is from about S/ 10 (3 USD) and a three-course meal for two at a nicer restaurant around S/ 60 (18 USD). Cards work mainly in Lima, while outside it cash in soles is handy, with US dollars accepted in places. ATMs are found across the country.
The best time is the dry season, from June to September, with clear skies in the Andes, ideal for Machu Picchu and trekking. November tends to be the most expensive. January is the cheapest, but it is the rainy season in the mountains. The coast has the opposite rhythm, with the warmest summer from December to March.
The main international airport is Jorge Chavez in Lima, served by LATAM among others, while the airport in Cusco is a hub for flights from neighbouring countries. Buses serve the country, including comfortable Cruz del Sur coaches (Lima to Cusco around S/ 187) and cheaper services. PeruRail trains link Cusco, Machu Picchu and Puno. Lima has buses and a limited metro. Domestic flights are popular over long distances.
