Oman is about forts, deserts, mountains and Arab culture. A trip is easy to build around a few highlights.
Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is about OMR 2.50 (6.50 USD) per person. Cards are widely accepted across the country, and ATMs are easy to find in the larger centres. Cash is handy for small purchases and local transport.
The climate is warm and dry. Travel is most pleasant from October to April, with December the most expensive. Summer, from June to August, is hot and that is when prices are lowest, though Salalah draws visitors then with the greenery of the khareef monsoon. Spring and autumn work well for the desert and the mountains.
International flights are run by Oman Air, Emirates and Lufthansa among others, landing at Muscat Airport with routes from Dubai, Frankfurt, London and other cities. You can also enter by land from the Emirates. Buses serve the country, with local fares in Muscat at OMR 0.20 to 0.50 and a national network reaching smaller towns too. The roads are good quality and car hire is popular. Domestic flights link Salalah, Sohar and Khasab among others.
A few recognisable properties from different cities for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in June, in the hot summer. December, at the height of the tourist season, tends to be the most expensive. Booking a few weeks ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
The most popular destination is Muscat, the capital and main gateway. It offers the widest choice of hotels in every standard and most of the attractions.
The highest average rates are in Nizwa and in the luxury resorts by the Musandam fjords. Sur and smaller cities tend to be the cheapest.
