Where to stay in New Caledonia: most popular cities

Most travellers stay in the capital and on the nearby islands. These are the destinations chosen most often:

• Noumea. The capital and main gateway, with the widest choice of hotels, from guesthouses to 5-star resorts. Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons beaches within walking distance.
• Isle of Pines (Ile des Pins). White beaches and lagoons in the south, with popular resorts and lodges. A destination for a calm, beach-focused stay.
• Bourail. The west coast of Grande Terre with resorts and parks. A good base for trips inland.
• Kone. A town in the north of the main island, a base for farming and mountain areas.

What to see in New Caledonia

New Caledonia is above all about lagoons, beaches and island culture. A trip is easy to build around a few strong highlights.

• Noumea. The Tjibaou Cultural Centre, the Museum of New Caledonia and colonial architecture. Local markets and town walks.
• Water sports. Diving and snorkelling at the La Dieppoise wreck and Ilot Canard, and windsurfing in the Anse Vata bay.
• Beaches. Baie des Citrons and Anse Vata by Noumea, Ilot Maitre by water taxi, and the beaches of the Isle of Pines.
• East coast. The village of Yate among waterfalls and lakes, and the Linderalique Rocks at Hienghene.
• Grande Terre. Trails in the central mountains, the Dogny Plateau and the Blue River Park.

Beyond the room, daily costs are higher than in the region. A meal in a cheaper restaurant is about 2,900 XPF (27 USD) per person. Cards work at large hotels and venues in Noumea, but outside the capital they may not be accepted, so carry cash. ATMs are in the city, sometimes with a withdrawal limit.

The climate is tropical, with a cooler and drier season from April to November. March is the cheapest, while June, in the southern winter, tends to be the most expensive. The weather suits beaches and diving for most of the year, though tropical rain and heat come between December and March.

Getting to and around New Caledonia

International flights are run by the national carrier Aircalin, landing at La Tontouta Airport near Noumea, with routes from Europe, Asia and the US west coast. Noumea is also a cruise ship port. Buses in Noumea are run by Karuia, with a ticket around 190 to 210 XPF. Domestic Air Caledonie flights from Magenta Airport link the capital with the Loyalty Islands and the Isle of Pines. A rental car, from about 52 USD a day, is convenient for the main island.
