Where to stay in Namibia: most popular cities

Most travellers stay in the capital and the Atlantic coast towns, while safari lodges sit by the parks. These are the destinations chosen most often:

  • Windhoek. The capital and main gateway, with the widest choice of hotels, from guesthouses to 5-star properties. A good base to start a trip.
  • Swakopmund. A coastal town with German colonial architecture, a popular break between desert and sea. Plenty of mid-range and upper-tier hotels.
  • Walvis Bay. A port and lagoon with colonies of flamingos and pelicans. A base for boat trips and birdwatching.
  • Luderitz. An atmospheric ocean town next to the Kolmanskop ghost town. Fewer properties, but full of character.
  • Around Etosha and Sossusvlei. Lodges and farms by the national parks. This is where safari and dune travellers stay.

What to see in Namibia

Namibia is above all about wildlife and desert landscapes. A trip is easy to build around a few strong highlights.

  • Etosha National Park. One of the best places for a safari, with animals gathering at the waterholes. You may spot rhinos and lions.
  • Dune 45 and Sossusvlei. The tallest dunes of the Namib desert, best climbed at dawn before the heat.
  • Fish River Canyon. The second largest canyon in the world, at its finest at sunrise and sunset.
  • Luderitz and Kolmanskop. A colonial town and the nearby ghost town slowly buried by sand, a slice of Namibian history.
  • Walvis Bay. A lagoon with pink flamingos and pelicans, a treat for bird and nature lovers.

How much does a trip to Namibia cost

Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate. A cheap meal is about N$120 (8 USD) and a mid-range dish about N$250 (17 USD) per person. Large hotels and restaurants take cards, while cash is handy in smaller shops and for transport. ATMs are available in the cities.

When is the best time to visit Namibia

Namibia has more than 300 days of sunshine a year and can be visited all year round. Wildlife is best seen from June to October, in the dry season, when animals gather at the waterholes. That is also the price peak. January and May are the cheapest, and the weather still suits travel. November tends to be the most expensive.

Getting to and around Namibia

Most international flights land at Hosea Kutako Airport near Windhoek, with routes to Germany and South Africa among others. You can also reach the country by bus from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Victoria Falls (Intercape Mainliner) and by car from neighbouring states. StarLine trains run by TransNamib serve the country. Cities have buses, but the main mode of transport is shared taxis, with fares depending on the route, around 12 NAD a ride. Car hire is convenient for longer distances.
