The country stretches along the coast, so destinations split into cities and seaside resorts. These are the ones travellers choose most often:

• Maputo. The capital, with colonial architecture, broad avenues and cafes, the natural base to start a trip.
• Vilanculos. The gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, a base for diving and dhow cruises.

Mozambique combines beaches, reefs and colonial history, so time splits between the coast and the cities.

Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate. Cards are accepted at large chain hotels and car rental firms, while cash (metical) rules elsewhere. ATMs are in the larger towns, so it is worth stocking up on cash before heading beyond them. A local transport ticket is just a few metical.

When is the best time to visit Mozambique

The dry season from May to October is best for beaches and safaris, with pleasant weather. The rainy season runs roughly from November to April. September tends to be cheapest and November the most expensive.

Most flights land at Maputo International Airport, usually from South Africa and Portugal. Around the country you travel by bus and minibus between cities, with rail on some routes. Distances along the coast can be long, so domestic flights or a rental car are useful for the longer legs.
