Malta combines ancient sites, beaches and characterful towns in a small area.

• Valletta. The whole capital is UNESCO-listed. See St John's Co-Cathedral and the daily gun salute from the Lower Barrakka Gardens.
• The Blue Lagoon on Comino. An azure lagoon with white sand, perfect for a swim and snorkelling, reached by boat.

How much does a trip to Malta cost

Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate for Western Europe. A cheap meal is about 15 € and a nicer one about 30 € per person. The currency is the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but some cash is handy for transport, taxis and petrol stations.

When is the best time to visit Malta

The nicest seasons are spring (April to June) and autumn (September, October), when it is warm and crowds are thinner. July and August are the peak, with the highest prices and heat. Winter is mild and cheap, good for sightseeing without swimming.

Getting to and around Malta

Flights use a single international airport near Luqa, with direct routes from across Europe (Air Malta and budget airlines). The island has no railway, so the main way around is an extensive bus network reaching almost everywhere. A single ticket is about 1.50-3 € and a weekly ticket around 21 €. Gozo is reached by ferry, and Valletta and Sliema are linked by a short crossing.
