The island is small, and life centres on the safe north, away from the volcanic zone in the south. These are the areas travellers choose most often:
Nightly rates vary between places. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:
| Area | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Old Towne | from approx. 300 XCD |
| Woodlands | from approx. 320 XCD |
| Cudjoe Head | from approx. 280 XCD |
| Brades and around | from approx. 270 XCD |
The island is called the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean for its green hills and Celtic heritage. The attractions combine the volcano, nature and beaches.
Beyond the room, the island is expensive for the Caribbean and little visited, so it stays low-key. The currency is the East Caribbean dollar, and the US dollar is also in circulation. Cards are accepted at hotels and larger venues, while cash is handy in smaller places. ATMs are in the north of the island.
The dry season from December to April is nicest and most expensive, peaking in March. Summer is cheaper but also the hurricane season, roughly June to November. September tends to be the cheapest.
Montserrat is a British overseas territory with a small airport, John A. Osborne, served by regional flights (including from Antigua) on airlines such as Winair and FlyMontserrat. A ferry from Antigua is an alternative. Around the island, a rental car or taxi is the easiest way to get about, as accommodation is limited and spread across the northern part.
A few types of stay on the island for reference:
Prices are lowest in September, in the middle of summer. They are highest in March, at the peak of the winter season. May and November combine lower prices with good weather, and booking ahead usually helps.
The most common choice is Old Towne and Woodlands on the safe north of the island, away from the volcanic zone. That is where most villas and apartments are.
The highest rates are premium properties with a pool and a view. Rooms and simpler guesthouses in the north are cheaper.
