Where to stay in Mauritania: most popular cities

Accommodation centres on the capital, but a few desert and port cities have their own properties too. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Nouakchott. The capital on the Atlantic and by far the widest choice of hotels, from guesthouses to 5-star properties such as the Sheraton. The natural base to start a trip.
• Nouadhibou. The second city and an important fishing port in the north.
• Atar. The gateway to the Adrar region and desert oases, a base for trips deep into the Sahara.
• Zouerat. A mining town in the north, on the route of the famous iron-ore railway.

What to see in Mauritania

Mauritania is above all the Sahara, oases and caravan heritage, though most of the country is desert.

• The Terjit oasis. Palm groves and a natural pool at just the right temperature, one of the country's finest spots.
• Ouadane. An abandoned town where the sand has taken over most of the streets, with handicrafts from Berber nomads.
• A camel safari. The Tanouchert oasis is a good starting point for a trip into the dunes with a night under canvas.
• The Port de Peche in Nouakchott. The afternoon return of the fishing boats is a colourful spectacle in the capital.
• Diawling National Park. Wetlands in the south with birdlife and nature.

The most pleasant time is the cooler season, roughly November to February, when the heat is milder. Summer is very hot, and desert trips are best planned outside the hottest months. December tends to be the cheapest.

The main gateway is Nouakchott International Airport, with regular links from Dakar and other regional cities, among others. Around the country you travel by bus and 4WD on desert routes, and the north is linked by the famous iron-ore railway, one of the longest in the world. Around the capital you get about by taxi.
