Macao is a place of contrasts, where the Portuguese past meets modern casinos.
Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate. An average meal is around 40-50 MOP per person. The official currency is the pataca (MOP), but the Hong Kong dollar is also in circulation and accepted for payment. Large hotels and restaurants take cards, while cash is handy in smaller venues.
The nicest time is autumn, from October to December, when it is dry and warm. Spring can be humid, summer hot and rainy with a risk of typhoons. Prices rise on weekends and during Chinese holidays, when crowds flock to Macao.
International flights use Macau Airport, but many travellers also arrive by ferry from Hong Kong or via the bridge linking the two cities. Around Macao an efficient network of buses and minibuses (operators TCM and Transmac) runs with a flat fare. Taxis are convenient, especially between the airport and your hotel, and the big casino resorts offer free shuttle buses.
