Hotels in Mongolia: your guide to where to stay

Mongolia is a land of endless steppe, the Gobi Desert, nomadic traditions and wildlife. Most accommodation is concentrated in the capital, while staying in a ger (yurt) rules out in the countryside. We list 424 properties across 41 cities. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.

How much does a hotel in Mongolia cost?

The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. It is priciest in summer, at peak season and during the Naadam festival. Winter is cheaper but very cold. The widest choice is in Ulaanbaatar.

Where to stay in Mongolia: most popular places

Almost all hotels are in the capital, and beyond it you stay in ger camps. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

  • Ulaanbaatar. The capital and the only large hotel hub, from hostels to 5-star properties (Kempinski, Chinggis Khaan). The natural base to start any trip.
  • Erdenet. The country's second city in the north, a business base with mid-range hotels.
  • Darkhan. An industrial city on the route to the Russian border, with a few hotels.
  • Gorkhi-Terelj Park. The closest steppe area to the capital, with ger camps, popular for a short trip.
  • The Gobi Desert (Dalanzadgad). A base for exploring the desert, with ger camps and simple hotels.

Nightly rates vary between places. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:

What to see in Mongolia

The country combines vast landscapes, nomadic traditions and wildlife, and many sights lie beyond the larger cities.

  • The Gobi Desert. Hiking and camel rides, with the town of Dalanzadgad as a convenient base for a multi-day trip.
  • Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. Horse riding, the Mongols' traditional way of travel for thousands of years, within a day trip of the capital.
  • Buddhist monasteries. The best preserved is Amarbayasgalant, full of paintings and images of the Buddha.
  • The Eagle Festival. The eagle-hunting tradition of the Bayan-Olgii region, with a festival held in October in Olgii city.
  • Lake Khovsgol (Khovsgol Nuur). In the far north, with fishing, kayaking, hiking and swimming in clear water.

How much does a trip to Mongolia cost

Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate. A cheap meal is about 6,000 MNT, and a mid-range one about 30,000 MNT per person. Cards are taken at all major hotels and even some smaller cafes and shops. Outside the capital, though, it is worth carrying cash (tugrik).

When is the best time to visit Mongolia

The most pleasant time is summer, from June to August, when the steppe turns green and the weather suits travel into the countryside. July brings the national Naadam festival of wrestling, archery and horse racing. Winters are harsh and very cold but cheaper, and the Eagle Festival takes place in October.

Getting to and around Mongolia

Mongolia has one international airport near Ulaanbaatar. The national carrier MIAT flies to 13 destinations, including Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, Berlin and Moscow. The famous Trans-Mongolian Railway, linking Beijing and Moscow, also crosses the country. Around Mongolia you mostly travel by 4WD with a driver over off-road tracks, and by bus in the capital. Distances are huge, so steppe trips are planned in advance.

Example hotels in Mongolia

A few recognisable properties in the capital for reference:

  • Kempinski Hotel Khan Palace in Ulaanbaatar (upper tier, from approx. 440,000 MNT).
  • Chinggis Khaan Hotel and Ulaanbaatar Hotel in the city centre (from approx. 300,000 MNT).
  • Town Yard Hostel for budget travellers (from approx. 85,000 MNT).
