Hotels in Myanmar: your guide to where to stay

Myanmar (Burma) is a land of temples, golden stupas and South-East Asian landscapes, still little travelled by tourists. Room prices are among the lowest in the region. We list 104 properties across 19 cities: from guesthouses to 5-star hotels. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.

How much does a hotel in Myanmar cost?

The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. It is cheapest in the rainy season and priciest in the dry season, from November to February. In Bagan and Yangon you will find properties in every price band.

Where to stay in Myanmar: most popular cities

Travellers mostly circle between the former capital, the temple valley and the royal city in the north. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

  • Yangon (Rangoon). The largest city and main gateway, with the widest choice of hotels, from budget to the Pan Pacific. The golden Shwedagon Pagoda and Bogyoke Market are within reach.
  • Bagan. The famous valley of around 2,000 temples, with hotels and resorts by the archaeological zone. The most sought-after destination.
  • Mandalay. The former royal capital in the north, a base for a cruise on the Irrawaddy River.
  • Inle Lake. Floating villages and gardens on the water, with stilt-house hotels.
  • Ngapali. The country's finest beach on the Bay of Bengal, with resorts close to Thandwe Airport.

Nightly rates vary between cities. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:

What to see in Myanmar

The country combines temples, rivers and beaches, and many places still keep a calm, untouristy feel.

  • Bagan. An 11th-century former capital where around 2,000 temples stand over roughly 67 km². Most beautiful at sunrise.
  • The Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. A golden stupa 99 metres tall, one of the most famous in the world, around 2,500 years old.
  • A cruise on the Irrawaddy River. A slow cruise from Mandalay to Bagan is a popular way to watch life along the banks.
  • Ngapali Beach. One of the country's best beach resorts, easily reached from Thandwe Airport.
  • Bogyoke Aung San Market. A covered bazaar in Yangon with handicrafts, textiles and cafes.

How much does a trip to Myanmar cost

Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A meal is about 3,000-4,000 MMK per person. The economy is mostly cash-based (kyat), with cards accepted only at luxury hotels in Yangon and Mandalay. ATMs are in tourist cities but may charge withdrawal fees, so it is worth keeping a cash reserve.

When is the best time to visit Myanmar

The best time is the dry season, from November to February, when it is warm and dry and the sky over Bagan is clear. This is also the price peak. From March it gets very hot, and from May to October the rainy season brings the monsoon, when rooms are cheapest.

Getting to and around Myanmar

The main air hub is Yangon International Airport, served by Myanmar Airways International, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Singapore Airlines, among others, with budget regional links from AirAsia out of Yangon and Mandalay. Entry usually needs an eVisa arranged in advance. Around the country you travel by long-distance bus, train and domestic flights between major cities, while tourist boats run on the Irrawaddy River.
