• Bamako. The capital on the Niger River and by far the widest choice of hotels, from simple apartments to properties with air conditioning and a spa. The natural base to start any trip.
• Bamako districts (Hippodrome, Badalabougou, ACI 2000). These cluster the business hotels and better-equipped apartments.
• Siby. A small town near Bamako at the foot of the hills, a base for short trips and walks, with a few intimate stays.

Mali is famous for the heritage of the old Sahel empires and for music that has won worldwide fame.

• Bamako on the Niger. A lively capital of markets, craft workshops and a thriving music scene.
• The Niger River. The country's main axis, lined with its key cities and fishing villages.

When is the best time to visit Mali

The most pleasant time is the dry, cooler season, from November to February. From March it gets very hot, and April is the peak of the heat and the highest prices. The rainy season runs roughly from June to September. Before travelling, check current safety advice, as the situation in the country can change.

The main gateway is Bamako International Airport, with connections via other West African and European capitals. Around the capital you travel by taxi and local minibus, while long-distance buses run between cities. The Niger River has served as a transport route for centuries, though navigation depends on the water level.
