Where to stay in Latvia: most popular cities

Latvia splits into the historic capital, a seaside resort and quieter inland towns. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Riga. The capital and most popular base, with a UNESCO-listed old town and the widest choice of hotels.
• Jūrmala. The most popular seaside resort, with spas, wooden villas and a wide beach, popular in summer.
• Liepāja. A coastal city with a beach and a music scene, cheaper stays in the west of the country.
• Cēsis. One of the oldest towns, with cobbled streets, a castle and a base within Gauja Park.

The country combines monuments, spas and nature in a small area.

• Riga old town. A UNESCO site and one of the world's largest collections of art nouveau architecture beyond the old town.

• Jūrmala. The most popular spa destination, with massages, treatments and beach relaxation.
• Aglona Basilica. A destination for Catholic pilgrimages, a baroque church near Daugavpils.

How much does a trip to Latvia cost

The currency is the euro. Daily costs are lower than in Western Europe, with a cheap restaurant meal about 7 euros and basic groceries about 2.5 euros. Most restaurants, shops and hotels take cards, and ATMs are in cities and larger towns.

When is the best time to visit Latvia

Summer, from June to September, is the best time for sightseeing and the Baltic beaches, when temperatures reach around 18-21°C and the days are long. It is also the price peak, especially in July. March tends to be the cheapest month for a room. Spring and early autumn are quieter and good for visiting Riga.

Getting to and around Latvia

The only large commercial airport is in Riga, served by airBaltic, Wizz Air and Norwegian, among others. Trains link Latvia with Estonia and Lithuania, with the trip to Estonia taking three to four hours. Daily long-distance buses, including Ecolines and Lux Express, run to neighbouring countries. Tallink and Stena Line ferries arrive from Sweden and Germany. Trains and buses serve the country, and Riga has a public transport network.
