The country combines monuments, spas and nature in a small area.
The currency is the euro. Daily costs are lower than in Western Europe, with a cheap restaurant meal about 7 euros and basic groceries about 2.5 euros. Most restaurants, shops and hotels take cards, and ATMs are in cities and larger towns.
Summer, from June to September, is the best time for sightseeing and the Baltic beaches, when temperatures reach around 18-21°C and the days are long. It is also the price peak, especially in July. March tends to be the cheapest month for a room. Spring and early autumn are quieter and good for visiting Riga.
The only large commercial airport is in Riga, served by airBaltic, Wizz Air and Norwegian, among others. Trains link Latvia with Estonia and Lithuania, with the trip to Estonia taking three to four hours. Daily long-distance buses, including Ecolines and Lux Express, run to neighbouring countries. Tallink and Stena Line ferries arrive from Sweden and Germany. Trains and buses serve the country, and Riga has a public transport network.
