Hotels in Lesotho: your guide to where to stay

Lesotho is a mountain kingdom surrounded on all sides by South Africa, known as the Kingdom in the Sky. The whole country sits high up, its lowest point above 1,400 metres, so passes, waterfalls and pony trekking on Basotho ponies define it. The choice of stays is small. We list 109 properties across 25 cities. Below you will find indicative prices, destinations, season tips and transport notes.

How much does a hotel in Lesotho cost?

The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room in Lesotho loti, the local currency. December is usually the cheapest month, around February and May the priciest. The lowest room rate recently started at around 400 LSL.

Where to stay in Lesotho: most popular cities

Most properties are in the capital and by the mountain passes. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

  • Maseru. The capital and most popular base, with the widest choice of hotels and the country's main airport.
  • Mokhotlong (Sani Top). A mountain town by the famous Sani Pass, a base for the views and off-road adventure.
  • Roma. A university town near the capital, with small lodges in the valley.
  • Teyateyaneng. A town known for crafts and weaving, a handy stop in the north.

Nightly rates vary between cities. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:

What to see in Lesotho

The country is a destination for lovers of mountains, horse riding and off-road routes.

  • Sani Pass. One of the region's most famous mountain routes, a road in the clouds on the border with South Africa.
  • Maletsunyane Falls. One of southern Africa's tallest waterfalls, near the town of Semonkong.
  • Pony trekking. The traditional way to explore villages and valleys on Basotho ponies, offered by many lodges.
  • Maseru. The capital, with craft markets and a base for trips into the mountains.
  • Maluti and Drakensberg ranges. High ranges with trekking routes and, in winter, a chance of snow in Africa.

How much does a trip to Lesotho cost

The local currency is the loti (LSL), pegged one-to-one with the South African rand, which is also in circulation. The country is cheap, with low daily costs. Cards are taken by hotels and larger places in the capital, but outside Maseru cash is handy. ATMs are mainly in the larger towns.

When is the best time to visit Lesotho

Because of the altitude, the weather is cooler than in neighbouring South Africa. Summer, from December to February, is warm and green but can be rainy. Winter, from May to August, is dry and sunny by day but freezing at night, with snow in the mountains. December is the cheapest month for a room, while around February and May tend to be the priciest.

Getting to and around Lesotho

The main airport is Moshoeshoe I near Maseru. Many travellers arrive overland from South Africa, as the country is surrounded by it and there are plenty of border crossings. Minibuses and shared taxis move around Lesotho, linking the main cities. In the mountains the roads can be tough, so off-road routes like the Sani Pass use four-wheel-drive vehicles. A rental car gives the freedom to reach remote valleys.

Example hotels in Lesotho

A few recognisable properties for reference:

  • Avani Maseru Hotel and Mpilo Boutique Hotel in Maseru (upper tier, close to the centre).
  • Maliba Mountain Lodge in the mountains (the country's top-rated premium lodge).
  • Sani Stone Lodge by Sani Top and Highlands Lodge in Mokhotlong (from approx. 650 LSL).

Frequently asked questions

When is a stay in Lesotho cheapest?

Prices are usually lowest in December. Around February and May tend to be the most expensive. Booking ahead usually helps you find a better rate.

Which city do travellers stay in most often?

The most popular destination is the capital, Maseru. It has the widest choice of hotels, the country's main airport and the best access from South Africa.

Does it snow in Lesotho?

Yes. Because of the high altitude, snow appears in the mountains in winter, from May to August, and nights are freezing. This is rare for this part of Africa and one reason people visit in winter.

How do I get to Lesotho?

The main airport is Moshoeshoe I near Maseru. As Lesotho is surrounded by South Africa, many travellers arrive overland through one of the many border crossings, often by minibus or rental car.
