Both the US dollar and the Liberian dollar are in circulation, and prices are often listed in both. Cash is the preferred method of payment, and ATMs work mainly in the capital. Outside Monrovia it is worth carrying cash. A few days of groceries cost around $20, and a cheap restaurant meal about $10.
The high tourist season runs from October to January, when prices rise and places fill up fast. The dry season from December to July brings milder weather. Surfers usually plan their trips around May or June, when the waves are at their best. March is the most expensive month for a room.
All international flights land at Roberts International Airport, about 35 km from Monrovia. Travellers usually have a layover in Brussels, Casablanca or Nairobi. Private buses and minibuses run around the country, with a ticket costing a few dollars. Taxis work well in the cities, with the fare agreed with the driver. In a smaller country with a weaker road network, a rental car, often with a driver, gives the most freedom.
A few recognisable properties for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in the rainy season, around April and September. March and the high season from October to January tend to be the most expensive. Booking ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
